If by underrated, you mean should have been much more popular than they were (sold more records), then two come to mind:

The Replacements, who have already been mentioned on this thread.
The Velvet Underground.

Both bands were well ahead of their time, and influenced many great bands who followed them.

Well.....this is gonna come out like a fart in church, but Extreme was not only underrated but much maligned as well. Probably will be here too.

For pure musicianship, check out 3 Sides to Every Story. Nuno was amazing. All guitars, pianos and orchestrations are his.

Unfortunately that album came out at the same time as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and all the other garbage that killed the art of guitar.

Extreme then went down as a lame hair band because noone ever heard 3 Sides.

I don't think i'd consider The Kinks under-rated or under-appreciated. I always liked them. My favorite song of their's is "Destroyer", and that whole album, for that matter, "Give The People What They Want" is their best (IMO). Buzzsaw plays that song at least once every other day.
They're underrated because they aren't mentioned in the same breath as the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or the Who. While they had hits, they did not nearly have the success of their peers. I for one, really dig the Kinks. They have one of the best Christmas Songs of all time - Father Christmas, to go with their rockin' songs. You Really Got Me is like the start of Heavy Metal, but other groups get the all of the accolades. I'm not saying they are as underappreciated as some of the bands here, but my vote is still for them.

I love that album. And I'm not a fan of their other stuff, except for a few songs, "Decadance Dance" and "Hip Today" to name a couple.

WOW, thought I was the only one who ever heard "Waiting for the Punchline". Biggest problem with the album is they were very bitter. "Hip Today" being a great example. Don't blame 'em though. Pornograffiti went platinum and they expected huge things for 3 Sides. Nirvana killed the dream.

Gas Huffer. They kind of killed any chance of being hugely popular, but they could have been. Excellent musicians.

I was also thinking Devo... they get written off as one hit wonders, but those guys can write really catchy tunes, and "Q: Are We Not Men?" is fucking perfect.

Default Midnight Oil

As far as Midnight Oil goes, I'm surprised I don't hear them on Sirius. My local classic rock station plays them from time to time. Tight band.

Dream Theater. These guys are all excellent musicians and don't get the recognition they deserve. The music industry nowadays is so fucked up. It is all about glamour than the actual music.

I will wade in...who to pick?

Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians (for those who havent heard him, i liken him to being a cross between Syd Barrett and Peter Gabriel).

Sugar/Bob Mould was great, of course they have their roots in Husker Du (yet another contender)

But really, i have to agree with a lot of posters before me, and ultimately vote for the Smithereens. Wonderful pop band, that just didnt "catch on", probably because at the time they were labeled Alternative, and just didnt get the airplay they so deserved.

Also, The Connells have a lot of qualities like the Smithereens, just not as big as a record label, they still have quite the following regionally.

No offense to anyone, but both The Kinks and the Ramones are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hardly the makings of an underated band. I would think that the Hall of Fame = Rated.

My vote is for The Pixies or The The.

My pick of Velvet Underground is also in the Hall of Fame, but I still contend they are underrated. They barely sold any records in their day, and you rarely hear them on the radio today. They were elected to the Hall of Fame in spite of this, because those who do the voting recognize the tremendous influence they had on bands that came later, like David Bowie, Roxy Music, Patti Smith, the Kinks, R.E.M., Iggy Pop, and other similar artists.

Anthrax........or Living Colour without a doubt two of the best technically sound bands ever......

Early Anthrax or Sound of White Noise is absurdly good.

Or Living Colour's stuff between Vivid and Times Up....Wow
