I think among rock fans, Rush gets their props, but they aren't that well-known among non-rock fans. And girls.

Steel Cranium is on a distinguished road

Doves (UK, better songwriting than coldplay, not marketed enough?)
Soundtrack of Our Lives (from across the big pond as well)
Fountains of Wayne (great pop songwriting)
Gang of Four (doing the Franz Ferdinand/Interpol stuff over 20 years ago)

Ever? probably Cult, even though Roxy Music did a lot of great new wave before the term ever existed.

Fugazi / minor threat

Ian mckaye should be the most respected musician in rock, yet rarely gets credit for how he's represented his music over the years and kept it indie.

Agreed. When I first saw the title of this thread, the 'Mats was the first band I thought of.

What great songs they had.

and on the same note, Tommy Stinson had the probably the most underrated album, 2004's Village Gorilla Head - it's a shame 'cuz the whole thing is AWESOME.

This thread confirms it - I am in the right place here on Sirius!

The Cult
Kiss (I know, I know. They are whores, but their music is underappreciated because of their "show" and becausa Gene is an ass.

Y&T didn't get much air play except Lipstick and Leather. Cult got some air play but their talent and influence is greatly under appreciated. I love it and crank it when they are on any channel at Sirius.

God does not believe in Athiests. Therefore they do not exist.

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush get my vote for the most underappreciated rock band in the history of music.

That cat could play his ass off on guitar!
