knac, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on why there are so few over-the-air metal staions if the fan base is so large.

I'm from Maryland & Baltimore's suburbs have the perfect metal demographic - tons of lower middle class whites (please, no one take offense at my gross generalization - I realize that's all it is). Yet metal stations have never been able to stick here.

Do you think it's an ad-rate thing - that maybe advertisers think that the buying power of this demographic just doesn't warrant supporting an all-metal station?
Im very sorry you fell this way. Please check out this article on KNAC.

You see KNAC was a very profitable radio station that fell victim to the real estate market back in 95, at the hight of alternative music mind you.
I have been Participating and listening to this type of music since 1983, and I have never considered myself lower middle class. I also have friends who are black and latino who enjoy Heavy metal and all pure rock music!
I was afraid my description of metal fans would be taken the wrong way. But I really believe that what I said is the general perception of the typical metal fan. I meant no offense.

Anyway, my main point was to question why metal stations don't seem to last. The article you linked seemed to be saying that it wasn't ratings that drew advertisers to KNAC, but fan loyalty at events (in other words the ratings must have been pretty low - why else would you have to try to sell based on something else?). But I'd think you'd need to start getting ratings at some point to keep advertisers happy - loyal fans or "quality" music (which is truly in the eye of the beholder) will only take you so far. Look at what happened to Arrested Development.....

Where did KNAC rank in the ratings?
