Default First Wave: Too commercial?

I am a big fan of late '70s thru late '80's alternative rock, punk, new wave, whatever you want to call it. Yet I find myself listening to First Wave less and less because of the total lack of deep cuts. To me, that era was about not being afraid to mix in plenty of music off the beaten path with the more commercial tunes. What about non-mainstream but popular within-the-genre songs by Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Stranglers, Delta 5, The Fall, Crass, Pylon, The Gun Club, Joy Division, etc.? I like Talking Heads and Pet Shop Boys as much as the next guy but there is so much more. I feel this is "my music" but it's being programmed like a commercial station catering to those who just tolerate rather than actually love the music of that era.

What you're looking for is Fred on XM. It's more or less exactly what you want.

First Wave is fine and serves an audience that wants all the mainstream hits, but that's not you...

Fred is a great channel but I prefer First Wave. There are many times that I can just put this channel on and leave it for awhile without needing to surf for something else. If they would just stop playing the smiths the channel would be perfect

I don't listen as much to First Wave. I really only catch the special shows these days. For that reason. Party Out of Bounds, Dark Wave etc. I'll problably Catch the Depeche Mode thing this weekend though.

Other than Dark Wave and Party out of Bounds, 1st Wave sometimes tends to barely play the genre of music that it claims to cover. The playlist is very tight, and not very deep at all.

I still claim that I shouldn't be hearing David Bowie (esp. songs like Fame that I heard on AOR radio for years before the so-called new wave/alternative era even took off) when I never/rarely hear songs by many other bands of the era.

1st Wave is by no means awful, but it's certainly not what it could be.

I love First Wave. When I get tired of the repetition and want to hear something different, I turn on Fred. But as someone else said, I can always turn on First Wave to hear something good.

However, a whole weekend of Depeche Mode? Uggh! A holiday weekend of all things, and I have to look for another station to listen to while I barbecue. Normal everyday First Wave programming would have been perfect for the holiday weekend.

I'd love to check out Fred but don't have XM; not sure if I'm ready for a second satellite service although maybe I'm just being too cheap.

Don't get me wrong; I like the songs on First Wave but I guess you could compare my situation to a classic rock fan listening to an adult contemporary station; he or she may like Bob Seeger but eventually will hunger for some Jimi Hendrix.

WOW! Thanks for looking all those bands up....amazing list. You're right---I'd love those channels and as much as I love Sirius looks like I need a quick XM supplement! Thanks again....

I love 1st Wave the way it is. It's the best thing now to me about Sirius. Funny, the fact that 1st wave is familiar and isn't too "deep" is exactly why I like it....and thats the opposite reason now why I don't like the Beat anymore.

Guess I'm hypocritical. :-)

The new Saturday night Safety Dance is perfect!!

The lack of deep cuts goes well beyond "First Wave". Anyway, I totally agree with you. Just spreading around some of the "Dark Wave" playlists throughout the day would help things significantly, IMHO. It's a start anyway.

I've emailed Swedish Egil and some of the other DJs about this very situation and of course it's the usual story...absolutely no responses whatsoever.

Odds are they would love to play more stuff, but Sirius appears to have a very strict, top-down policy on playlists on most streams, First Wave included. Therefore, writing them is probably futile.

If you want deeper music your only bet is XM. Also, their PDs have much more freedom and have recently responded to many requests and issues from listeners.

Yeah, I agree with the lack of depth. I've always said there are so many more bands out there than the Smiths, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran.

I tuned in this afternoon, upon reading this post, just to confirm. When I logged on, the Smiths "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was playing. I cringed. When the next song, Duran Duran "Girls on Film" came on, I got disgusted and switched off the player.

For a while there, I thought FW was improving, but apparently it's the same old, same old. There are several channels like this on Sirius... one other is the Coffeehouse. I swear you can't go a half hour without hearing the Indigo Girls and/or Tracy Chapman.
