I had to go with Jimmy Page...

Steve Vai was a close second...

But my all time favorite is George Harrison...
(Most of his stuff was The Beatles, and I consider them mostly Pop.)...

No Joe Satriani? He taught most of the greats!

Tough choices. I went with Clapton, just because I've always liked his music.

Lindsey Buckingham never gets any credit. I belive he is so underrated. Just listen to the LIVE version of Big Love.

Whenever folks talk about great guitarists, I'm always suprised that Gary Moore's name never comes up.
Maybe not the best ever - but a great one, nonetheless.

Its way too hard to pick just one, because they all played so different and are great at different things. Chuck Berry started it all, Jimi turned it upside down, , EVH turned it upside again, Page blew everyone away, Pete Townshend made rhythm cool, Gilmour played rock blues better then anyone.

Plus guys like Lindsey Buckingham, Alex Lifeson, Jerry Garcia, and Tony Iommi never got the respect they deserved. Clapton is the most overrated guitar player ever.

I picked Jimi Hendrix, Page would be a close second.

I didn't see this until after I posted and I couldn't agree more. They guy is an amazing guitar player. I tried to figure out never go back again and never could.

One more thing....Fractured Mirror might be the best guitar instrumental ever. Rock On Ace !

Lindsey is unique because of his folk style. he can pull things off on the guitar most people can't. he can make it sound as if 2 guitars are playing at the sametime.

If you can read guitar tablature, here it is.
Strap a capo on the 6th fret. (I can't really play it. It's not easy.)

I voted for Hendrix. He invented so many new sounds with the instrument. He played excellent rhythm and riffs. I love the solos in "All Along the Watchtower", "Red House", "Machine Gun", "Voodoo Child", etc.

No one has mentioned Randy Rhoads yet? Loved his work on Blizzard of Oz.
Brilliant, but short career.

I like Jimi Hendrix but as others have said they all play differently.

How about Clapton laying on the floor of a cab crying after the first time he saw Hendrix play because he knew he was better. Sorry just remembering the greatest guitar riffs of all time discussion on Stern on Monday.

No I can't get Cliffs of Dover out of my head.

Kirk Hammett and Van Halen rock as well.
