All those guys are great, great guitarists. If I had to pick the best it would be Dime. Sure he is best known for his powergroove metal the most but he was very versatile. Pick up Rebel Meets Rebel, that really showcases his ability.
Other great ones I would pick:
Dave Mustaine: He wasn't just the lead singer of Megadeth!!!!!!!!!!
Randy Rhodes!
Tony Iommi
Zach Wylde
Scott Ian
Joe Satriani
Yngie Malmsteem (I'm sure I spelled that wrong)
Ted Nugent
What about Willie Nelson, there are great country guitarists too!

It's impossible to pick one. So many styles,so many tastes. I love Gilmore, Page, Van Halen, on and on. How about a list of the greatest guitarists ever, without any ranking, cause really , how can you pick.

It's sacreligious not to vote for Hendrix, but I had to give Jeff Beck his props. Anyone that's seen him play in the last ten years knows that he has never stopped learning, changing, improving, and that he will play anything anytime.

Out of the three guitarists that came out of the Yardbirds, Beck is probably the best guitarist.

Chuck Berry and David Gilmour, as good as they are at what they do, really don't belong on the list. Someone not mentioned that might deserve to be on the list is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. Another fatal mistake is leaving off Frank Zappa.

Anyone with a CLUE would have said
PETE TOWNSHEND, WOODSTOCK performance of UNDERTURE.

Very few things are as spectacular to experience than that (well Live at Isle of Wight maybe)

What's about Johnny Marr? He has added to an already great Modest Mouse.

I was watching MTV's Crossroads last night. It was Ronnie Milsap, and Los Lonley Boys. I was impressed. Other than "Heaven", i haven't heard any other Los Lonley Boys songs. He's quite a guitar player too.

Here's one prompted by what's playing on BuzzSaw at this moment:

Donald Roeser

Not saying he's necessarily the best, but he's one of the most underrated 70s rock guitarists.

I recently saw Beck at HOB in Myrtle Beach. I was about 10 feet from the stage and I was blown away. I've seen Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson and Beck just stomped them completely. No pick, 1 guitar and I didn't really see him hitting his pedal board much and the tone and sounds he got were just incredible.

I'd also throw out Al DiMeola, and Chet Atkins...

Yeah, Beck seems to be able to squeeze all that sound out with his hands.

Let's remember the title is "rock guitarist." I draw the line at Chet! LOL! Otherwise I'd be throwing out Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges.
