Has anyone taken advantage of the offer to send your S50 back to Sirius for them to upgrade your firmware?

Here is the link that describes the offer:
http://www.sirius.fthgroupinc.com/

Do they really upgrade your unit or do they send you a re-furbished unit with the new firmware? Possibly could this be a way to get a broken s50 replaced once it is out of warranty?

Does anyone know what the turnaround time is?

Do they always return a working unit?

I did the firmware upgrade myself, and so far, so good. I would be skeptical about sending my unit off to who knows where.

That's very cool that they are doing that. I'm sure many will think it's something SIRIUS should do and I tend to agree. I just hope that it doesn't get taken advantage of so that things like this aren't offered in the future.

Default return to sirius

Me_Rubin,
thanks for the post, I'll probably send that unit in just to see what happens.
I keep getting outbid on ebay for another s50.
I'll keep trying.
thanks again.

Notice the disclaimer from them about not being responsible for any loss of recorded content in you unit? With over 250 songs already saved in my S50, I'd hesistate to send them mine if I had no problems doing the previous updates. Hmmmmm......I wonder if they are also snooping for RIAA on what and how much we have in our S50s too........ you never know these days.....

I could never depend on my s50 to keep my songs for any length of time. Everytime you do the 3 finger salute you would always lose your content. Even with my stiletto, everytime you do the recovery procedure you lose content. When I want to save content, I make sure I replay into a computer and save as an mp3.

When you replay into your computer, you're recording through your sound card in real time, right? Is there a way to back up your content, even though it's encrypted, so that you could restore back to the same S50 later?

Well I decided to take advantage as I finally tried the latest upgrade and the baseband would not update. So I filled in the form, removed the battery and back battery cover as was stated on the web site. I also put a return address sticker inside my unit to see if indeed they fix them or replace them.

So here is my answers to my questions...

Again, If you want to take advantage of this offer here is the URL

Although technically it is out of warranty. ( Bought Nov 2006) I did put the purchase date on the form was the date I last updated my subscription to a yearly sub which was a month ago. This was one of those radio's that I had exchanged the original service with my Stiletto, but the radio continued to work.

I sent it UPS Ground to CA it took about 5 days to get there. They sent it back UPS 2 Day for FREE! It cost me about 10 bucks to send it.

Although I still have not activated it, what they sent back is a refurbished unit with a new SID. They sent a letter with the unit saying they could not upgrade the firmware either. Here is the letter:

The new unit has reconditioned stickers and a firmware sticker on it.

I must say the returned unit is in much better shape than the one I sent. My screen had scratches all in the center from the rubbing of the plastic leather case cover and a few dings on the bottom from drops.

I'm happy with this service. Now I have to fight with Customer Service so they don't try to charge me another 15 bucks to transfer the SID.

Hopefully others will take advantage of this service!

Update:

Reactivated no problem and NO $15 Charge!

I don't know about that, but they did take away the ability to broadcast on 87.7 so my next project will be to put in a fm direct relay adapter in my wife's car so she does not have static. She did say that the radio has never worked so good since the upgrade. Before she said it kept cutting off and on and she had to keep rebooting it to play again.

I noticed that your firmware version is 0.5.56. Is there a way to tell what f/w you have on an S50? When I click

device settings/device info

on mine, all it tells me is S/W ver 1.5.6, copyright PortalPlayer.

I was able to update my sirius S50 to the new firmware, but maybe it didn't work properly. Me_Rubin, I tried to dowload your three finger reset pdf but it locked up on me. I may try that then try shipping it back. I really like the S50 feature more than the SL2

If you connect it to MSS, it will tell you that version number. They call it the Baseband #, IIRC.

Thanks! MSS shows my S50 w/baseband (firmware) 0.5.56. So it's up-to-date and doesn't need to be sent off to Sirius.

Good thing, too. I'd hate to lose the songs I've got loaded. Has anyone come up with a way to back these up to a PC without recording them through the sound card in real time?

I just checked the link and it downloads fine. Here is the link to the latest version of my dock.

http://rubinsworld.com/public/Sirius/3FingerSalute.pdf

I know some people have reposted the doc, but this is my latest version. Note that the document does not utilize the latest firmware but the process is the same.
