Default FM Transmitter (and some S50 stuff too)

I recently got Sirius and really like it. I have the S50... and it's really cool... Initially, everything was fine. Then I had problems with the screen freezing - updated to the new .10 version - but then it wouldn't pick up any signal anymore. It would just stay at "Aquiring Signal". I reset the S50 using the latest My Sirius Studio version.

This actually fixed the problem. I got a good signal and everything worked fine. However, I then went on an 8 hour drive back up to college. It worked fine. I was able to save my favorites. I replayed them when I wanted... basically everything worked. But then about 10 min from my destination it froze. I tried to "heart" a song and the screen froze. I tried restarting my car (I was at a stoplight, ) but then it wouldn't even turn on. So I removed the battery for >10 sec and put it back in.... and i wasn't getting a signal anymore.

SO - I reformated the S50 again using my PC. It worked... until I started driving and then I lost signal... now. I would assume the solution would be to fix my antenna... except that i had GREAT signal all the way up and nothing has changed there... so it has to be something in the S50.

Now, as far as the FM Transmitter is concerned... I think there were problems on the installation maybe... or maybe they all do this and there's some quick fix.... I dunno... here's the deal... the radio picks up a very staticy signal UNLESS my hand is near it or touching it. Yeah. I know. You think I'm crazy. I'm not.

I would be driving on my trip and I'd (I guess) get close to someone else using Sirius... but my radio would all of a sudden switch to play some other type of music. But as soon as I put my hand near it, it would go back to my station. If I didn't have my hand there it would sometimes be staticy, sometimes be perfect, sometimes be completely screwed up.

But again... as soon as I put my hand near it (near as in within 2 inches or so), it would clear up and it would REALLY clear up if I was touching it. ("it" by the way, is the S50 car kit stand, not the S50 itself)

So here's my questions....

1. Any suggestions with the S50? Sucker is starting to annoy me :P
2. Since I'm assuming my hand is acting as some sort of ground OR it is picking up the stray signals... is there anything I can do to fix the FM transmitter so that it doesn't need me touching it all the time?

Thanks for the help,

Burke

Compared to my Xact StreamJockey, i think the S50 FM modulator power is a bit weak. I have not used the additional FM "whip antenna" supplied, but the fact that your hand makes the signal better is a HUGE indicator that it needs a "bigger antenna" to add power to the signal.

The Modulator is using your body (arm) as an extension to the antenna.

I plan to add the small antenna to the base tomorrow. I hope it helps the "signal bleedthrough" problems i've been having with the new s50. Its not that bad, but its noticable compared to my previous tuner.

I drive a ford taurus and they actually put the tuner in the trunk. I used to have an XACT Visor that worked pretty well but the S50 sounds better than that did, even without the FM antenna plugged it. I plugged that in and it eliminated a lot of static and low level noise for me. So, compared to what I had before, the FM transmitter in the S50 seems better.

i agree -- with my Xact, i tried both hardwiring and FM Mod. -- i liked the FM mod sound better -- more bass and depth .

Now, you are talking about the antenna on the FM Mod, not the antenna I installed on the outside of my car, right? Somehow I need to make a bigger antenna for the internal FM mod on the kit?

i dont think you would get static from a bad sirius signal -- usually it just cuts out completely.

the static is coming from the FM mod broadcasting the audio to your cars headunit radio.

the fact that your hand is improving it means you probably would have success with the small whip antenna to improve the FM signal TO your radio.

I wondered about this myself.
There were questions a year ago about the left over pieces from the car kit.
