Default TIP: Car Dock at Home

After reading many of the threads about the issues with finding a home dock, I listened to some of you who use the car dock at home. For less than half the price of the home dock I use my S50 at home. All I bought was an additional antenna {$40} which works absolutely perfectly in my living room {first floor} not near a window, and a $10 DC to AC converter. And since I used the sticky tape to mount the dock in my car, I utilized the remaining hardware which came with the S50 and have another mount right next to my home stereo.....I must say it actually looks pretty cool, and it works outstanding! I even have great reception on the stereos tuned to my satellite frequency in all rooms of my NYC house.

Would it have not been effective to place this pearl in a pre-existing post that has already discussed it? Adding an antenna doesn't really scream "make a whole new thread." No?

Don’t you have to take the dock back and forth between your house and your car? If so, how do you mount the dock and the S50 in your house and your car?

To Magnus: Find another hobby.

To BabaBooey: It is a bit of a pain but the S50 comes with enough mounting parts to use the adhesive foot in the car with swivel mount on it, then leave the mouting bracket {1} with the male threads on it on the S50. Then I use the other mounting bracket {2} with the other swivel in the house. I have to unscrew it everytime I want to move it, but hey, I have satellite radio in my house now for less money, and I don't have to wait 2 months to get a home dock.

Hey, do I need any cords or wires for the radio itself to get reception, or just the antenna? Thanks.

Steve - Which antenna are you using? My apartment (also in NYC) is on the first floor, so my reception is OK, but not great. Getting a clear shot of the sky is tough because I'm surrounded by large buildings. I'm currently using the car antenna on a metal cookie sheet, but I was wondering if the Monster or even the Sirius home antenna that you can aim works as well or better. I don't like having to hang a big metal tray out my window.

Thanks

Actually Car antenna's work better then home antenna's correct me if I am wrong but car antenna's are omni directional and home are uni directional which basically means home antenna needs to be facing sats at all times to get signal and car antenna you do not just need clear view of sky.

Is this really the case that the antennas work differently?

Default Car Dock at home

I am using a second car antenna which I bought at Best Buy, and I have it sitting on top of my wooden home entertainment cabinet. I am also on the first floor, and there is no clear shot of the sky. Even with the crappy weather the reception has been perfect. If you check the signal on the S50, it will tell you the terrestrial and satellite signal strength. You will notice that in urban areas. such as here in NYC, there is a strong terrestrial signal. The S50 does in fact pick up a signal from repeaters on the ground, and not just the satellite. That is why you don't have to have a clear shot at the sky with the antenna indoors.
