Default RUMORS: NO portable add-on for S50?

So says getsiriusinfo blog: http://getsiriusinfo.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=248

Credible or not, who knows?

Here's the text in case you don't feel like clicking:

Posted: Fri Jan 27, 2006 11:33 pm Post subject: Unannounced SIRIUS Units Currently in Production
Many folks were shocked that SIRIUS did not have much to show off at CES this year. SIRIUS and retail executives had a closed meeting at CES. SIRIUS did let these VIPs see a hint as to what SIRIUS has in the works. In the past some SIRIUS units shown off at CES have not had the best of luck like the Xact Rego. Last summer SIRIUS had a media day to show off new stuff like the S50, SIRIUS One, and Starmate Replay. In the past some SIRIUS units have just popped up like the Sportster Replay. We are told SIRIUS is not looking to talk up products way in advance as they did in the past. As most know the S50 was pushed back over and over, upsetting some. Now GSI has learned that new SIRIUS units are in production. Now full details are being kept very tight, but we want to report of some tidbits that have leaked. Please note the information we are reporting is from inside sources. When we get email tips, then we at GSI check into the information and report the info we find out. Please treat this information in the following way. We know that SIRIUS has units due out around June.. and details of the unit(s) have not yet been released. We are getting some details of these units, these details are just bits of info from a number of sources. Here is what we are hearing, look for a next generation Sportster, smaller, sleeker, and “improved display layout”. Our source tells us of a rumor about some new SIRIUS plug and play units going to a S50 like display, with station logos, and color display. We do not know if this new Sportster will have an S50 like display but some speculation is that it will. We are also told the “new” sportster may not work in the current sporster docks due to the smaller size of the unit. Back on Dec 8th we reported some rumors of the S50 going portable. Some internet chat was that the S50 would get a portable dock to make the current unit work on the go. The S50 car and home docks are were the satellite receiver is located. We are told that there is no plan for such an S50 portable kit at this time. Our sources tell us that SIRIUS is working on an S50 like unit that will be portable for father’s day. May and June in the past has been the time when SIRIUS has released new items. We are following some trails of info about other units and we will post info when we get more sold info on them. Once more the info above is just speculation and rumors based on info provided by GSI sources.

Most of this could be speculated without any kind of source from SIRIUS. This GSI source has often times been proven misinformed. This is nothing more than speculation.

It is good that SIRIUS has finally stopped making a big deal out of new hardware that as we all know has often times turned into vaporware.

I hope it is just speculation, it would make me really mad if they outdated the S50 just a few months after lots of people dropped $300 on it and another $100 for the home dock.

I thought there was a post a while back in this forum about Sirius making an accessory for the S50 that would allow it to be truely portable.

The bottom line is Sirius will introduce new hardware, and while I have no idea as to when summer does make sense. The same with the iPod, they update that thing it seems every 6 months and that also costs $300.

Default Power Pack

I spoke to an S50 support person last night and he said that he saw pictures of the new add on piece to make the s50 portable. He says that there is no release date yet, but people in the office are calling it the Power Pack. It is a seperate device that plugs into the s50 and wraps around the unit. Within the Power Pack is a portable antenna. He also said that the goal is to make it so the s50 will never be obsolete. Even if new models come out, the original S50 will always have free version updates. At this point, they are planning on releasing new versions every month and are constantly improving. The next version should include a bookmarking function which should solve the back to back recording problem.

That is good if true, but for some reason I think he was looking at the Power Pod for the Xact XTR1.

He was in an office solely for s50 product support. This guy seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I was on the phone with him throwing out quesions for a good half hour. Figured I'd try to get as much info from him as I could after waiting on hold for 45min.

If this is true it will be great and I'll be buying 2 more car docks for me and my g/f's backup vehicles. The cool thing about the S50 is that you only have to pay for 1 subscription and then get another car or home dock and just move the S50 around from place to place. Cheaper than having to pay for another subscription and buying another radio.

Not only is it cheaper it is the only reason I considered a subscription. If I had to pay for a subscription in each location I might listen there is no way I be subscribing. The S50 makes for a fairer way of handling subscriptions.

I was thinking it would be kinda cool if they had a "key" that could be placed into each receiver. The key would contain the unique subscription ID that is in embedded into each of the S50 units.

With a key approach you could move it from receiver to receiver. A key "port" could be used if the receiver itself wasn't activated.

Maybe one day...

Sounds like the XM Passport which is a little over an inch square and will corner the market on add-ins to existing hardware unless SIRIUS gets their act together. Do a search for this and you'll see...
