Default HELP! I Think my S-50 is dead

Ok I have had my S-50 since it launched and have been pretty happy with it until this week....

I Tape Stern every single day of every single week since the 9th...I also have about 70 songs hearted from Sirius programming... I clear out my 4 days of stern at the end of each week to start the new week off with a clean slate. Well a few days ago I go to listen to the Jenna Jameson segment from tues or wed.. I click on it in my saved shows menu and a blank screen shows up... with a runtime of 0:00. I get pretty pissed off but I chock it up to poor reception and maybe it just didnt tape. I go to listen to my saved music which I know for a fact worked...same issue with every song I clicked. It does this whether it is undocked..in my car dock and in my home dock.

Why all of a sudden did this happen..I always power down before removing it from the doc and I am not running the buggy 1.2 update yet so what gives...I reset the channels...nope nothing...restored to defaults...nope nothing changed (except I lost my pre-sets..but kept my recordings which struck me as odd) It says I am at 52% memory capacity. Recordings are also not working now.....

I just tried to heart a song to see if it did this too a new recording...when the song ended the heart icon remained thru the next song..i go to change the channel and it asks me if I want to save the partial..I click yes and go to find it...nothing shows up????????????

Any ideas..or do I need to call in my warranty :\

Any advice would be great...thanks

I hate to say this, but I believe the issue was caused by all the recording you did and the fact that there are bugs in the firmware. I've seen this issue with others as well. What happens as you do a lot of recording and erasing the index files get corrupted. I don't believe it's your falt, its the falt of the software. The fix well at least temporary fix is to reset the system back to factory default which will wipe out your entire collection and reset or rather rebuild all the index files. There may be some software out there that could fix the files but I don't know of any. Others who have additional problems see "Data Errors" where you need to reformat the flash drive and again you loose everything. Other variations of this is that the system thinks the memory is full and then locks up everything and the only fix is to reset. Sorry to tell you this, but I think there are still bugs in the system. I guess it's kinda like windows, you need to reboot it every few weeks just to keep it working. or reformat your disk every year or so because its slows down so much.

Good luck. There is lots of info out on the forum about these issues you just have to look for it.

If you call support they will walk you through some of these fixes, but be prepared for long wait times.

In the end I don't think your s-50 is dead, I just think you like the rest of us jumped on the band wagon early with the technology and they just need to get the bugs out. meanwhile get it back working, don't put your only copy of mp3's on the s50.

could be a memory fragmentation issue with the Flash memory.

I've read on this forum about ways to de-fragment the flash so issues lik this will go away

do a search for "fragmentation"

Other than deleting the Stern shows daily, or every other day I have the same recording pattern as you., with around the same number of songs. I also leave my unit on Buzzsaw or Hair Nation overnight, so there is usually 7-10 hours of channel content. I am running the 1.2 firmware, as that was the shipping firmware when I got my 3rd S50. If you are running 1.0.10 you have the same firmware, it was just a change in the naming convention.

I Defrag my unit 2-3 times per week. Windows will see the S50 as a removable drive, and you can defrag it from the disk tools.

I have had no problems with playback, other than some FF/Rewind problems. I have actually seen my screen superimpose the <<, ||, >> symbols. I have never lost content, just a few seconds of time to shut the unit down and back up again. I can not say that the defrag is the cure, but it may help.

WOW I think you are on to something here. I was very supprised how fragmented my s50 was. I have deleted content and done the low level format and just yesterday I restored the factory default showing someone at work how to do it. Here is the before and after shots showing the fragmentation ( in RED )

I was also surprised how long the process took for 1gb space.
I wonder if the s50 in its recording process breaks up the recording is such small chunks that it is prone to fragmentation.

Thanks for this tip!

Flash memory does take a long time to defrag due to the slow read/write speeds. I have a 1GB SD and 1GB CF card for my iPaq PPC, they take at least as long as the S50 to defrag.
