Default TIP/QUESTION: Scheduled recording when memory is full

So I think i've come accross something new, not major, but odd.

A couple of days ago, my wife mentioned that her "my sirius channels" disspaeared. I assumed they would come back as is noted in the bugs after a re-dock. Forgot about the issue.

I have a constant recording set for the stern replay, 5-1 hour blocks. Have had pretty good luck with it. Today, it went to record at 9 pm, switched the channel, "recording is about to begin" prompt came up, and it should have started. At 9:02 I looked over, and no heart in the corner, just the #. I thought, oh crap...it froze. I try to change the channel, seems to respond. So I reset the recording 5 minutes later, exact same thing happened. Tried a third time, exact same thing happened.

Finally, I went into content management, and looked at memory usage, and it was 98% full. So that explained the problem, I had like 48 1 hour blocks of stern, plus some loved songs. Cleared the shows, reset the recording, and it worked fine. I'm guessing that my sirius channels will come back as well.

But at least it does clear the my channels to make room for recording, which is good and bad at the same time. I guess it was my own stupid fault for not keeping track of it, but it's a bit odd that no warning comes up saying memory full...it just doesn't record.

Anyone else have this happen?

you would think that it would pop a warning or something instead of just chooking. ANyone else have it happen? (just to confrim something else didn't happen to crop up at the same time it was 98% full )

At least on the flip side it's good to know you can actually get about 50 hours of conent on there. I'll post back when if fills up, and I'll try it again. First I want to confirm that "my channels" will come back now.

If the designers of the s50 had anything to do with Wile E. Coyote, he'd run off the cliff, and then just hang there forever.

ROFL!

Interesting though! I wonder if if doesn't check, starts recording, it fills memory, then dumps out of it, and nothing is saved because it hasn't marked the end of the segment/recording.

Kidding aside- you might be onto the sequence of events. If it crashes or otherwise finds an upset condition during a recording it loses the entire recording not just the missing piece. It seems the content database or file table is only updated once the recording has been completed.

Seriousness aside-

What they really need to do is call up good old ACME and order some programmers….

They might not yet be to the level of being called “Mickey Mouse” but they certainly do seem to be at the while e coyote level…..

I'm not saying your sequence of events is incorrect, really, no one knows, but the thing is that it doens't even start to record, or at least not that I can tell, meaning the heart icon never appears. Only the recording is about to begin prompt. So that would imply that it's realizing it's full, and just skipping the recording. I dunno, it's annoying.

Just to add a data point. I tape stern daily and once a week or so I just do a “delete all” to make space. AS luck would have it yesterday I got in the car and noticed that it didn’t record all the portions of that days show. Checked memory and it was 95%. So I tried to use the love button to start in instant recording and it did give me a “memory full” message and refused to permit the recording.

So at least on manual recordings they give you a warning (why it pops at 95% is weird- it wouldn’t even let me pick the amount of time to schedule- for all it knew I wanted to record 5 or 10 minutes… - probably just the memory indicator bug rearing it’s ugly head.)

I’m not really up at 6am to watch what it would do if there was a scheduled recording to see if I could repeat the situation in the first post.

And there doesn’t seem to be any warning indicator that already scheduled shows wont record. The memory indicator just says 95% and I played around in content management schedule screens and nothing jumped out at me. I didn’t think at the time to make a new scheduled recording to see what would happen there.

Did you also have some MyChannels saved? If yes, it's looking like it doesn't delete those on its own to make room for scheduled recordings. If that's the case, that's another thing they should fix. Otherwise you pretty much have to turn MyChannels off so you're not worried about it filling itself up with those and losing your scheduled recordings.

jubrand,

In my case, it DID delete my channels. That is what my wife notice first, that her "my raw dog" went missing. When I had my 98% full all of the my channels were gone, and the unit was filled with 48 hours of stern, and some loved songs.

efudd,

it may be too late, but could you try to set an hour long scheduled recording when you're around the unit, assuming your memory is still full. It would be good to confirm that what happened to me is happening to other people as well.

Well that's better than leaving them at the expense of your scheduled recordings. But wiping them out completely isn't that great either. I'd prefer Tivo-style of deleting enough of a MyChannel to fit the recording on there.

At least you've been able to GET a MyRawDog channel....I've left it on there overnight a few times and it just won't do it! Maybe a space issue at this point,

to be honest with you though, I don't know if it deleted the my channels bit by bit or not. It's completely possible that when it hit 75% it deleted half of my raw dog for example....but I just don't know. That would be the smart thing, I just don't think i'm ready to give the S50 that kind of credit yet.
