Default SW Enhancement Req - PC/Broadband recording via S50 Software

My biggest complaint with the S50 is that it spends too much time connected to the docks. To use the timers on the S50, you need to make sure that the unit is in one of the docks before the timer fires. This is inconvenient and reduces the amount of time that I have to use the unit as a portable device. However, the S50 software could be modified to make the S50 much more useable. Here’s how: Modify the Sirius software so it can make timer-based recordings of the Sirius content using a PC with a broadband connection. The Sirius software already has access to the live Sirius stream, so the engineers will just need to add the timer and recording capabilities. The user would then only have to connect the S50 to the PC periodically download the content. At USB 2.0 speeds, it should only take a couple of minutes to transfer the content to the S50. This solution would provide many benefits. 1) The S50 would spend less time as a recorder and much more time as a playback device (what it was supposed to be). 2) PCs have much more storage so you could record more content than you need and pick and choose which content to transfer when you connect your S50. 3) Users could update the content on their S50 in locations that don't have radio reception (ie. work). 4) [bonus feature] support for recording multiple channels at the same time.

I completly agree. It would be great for the software to record our favorite shows such as Howard and transfer it onto the S50 when we come home. For many of us the S50 is our only receiver, I for one do not want to leave my receiver on in my car when it is not running.

I can't see the record industry lawyers letting this happen. They already neutered the S50 capabilities, to add something like this would be a huge fight.

IMO, I'd rather they focus on their core business, satellite radio and not try to branch out. Also, it would only really benefit one of their many devices and if they really get the portable devices going soon, there would be less need. It would be nice, but a complete change of business model.

Sirius should be able to point to iTunes/iPod as proof of concept. As long as Sirius encrypts the content so that it is only useable by the S50, this feature should be no different than using iTunes and the Internet to download music to an iPod.

I think iTunes/iPod pay a much larger royality/license fee per song than Sirius or XM pays.

Still, with iTunes, I get the entire song, with no fade, and no clipped ends due to the PDT change before the end of the song.
