Default QUESTION: Home dock freezes and antennas

For anyone that has a smoothly operating home dock (no freezes on scheduled recordings), are you using the home antenna or one of the dot micro (car) antennas?

I ask b/c I've tried everything to get my home dock to work, inclulding the nightly reset. Mine freezes in the morning probably 75% of the time if it's waking up. I've checked my signal, and I'm getting pretty much full terrestrial strength using the home antenna.

I just spoke to tech support, and they insist that freezes are caused by loss of signal at the time the recording starts, even if it's for a split second. This isn't the first time they've told me that either. I noted that I've never seen the signal drop to zero in the antenna aiming menu item, but he said that it still could be happening at the time it turns on to record.

So I'm going to go buy a micro dot antenna and try that, b/c people say it's the most reliable one. I just want to know if there's a pattern. Maybe the home dock antenna has been the problem all along.

No responses? Come on! I know SOME of you have working home docks! You using the car antenna or not?

I tried a new home antenna (thanks to paintedantenna and thesiriusstore for that!), but this morning, no luck. This time it didn't freeze though. The dock and s50 turned on but the recording never started. The second segment didn't start either, so who knows what the hell happened.

I'm gonna try my car antenna just to check, but I really think I just have a shi**y home dock.

I've tried leaving it on to record. It's worked sometimes, but not all the time.

I have a home dock and am using the antenna that came with it. I get 100% satellite/0% terrestrial signal. I tried using the "wake up" feature once and it locked. I leave the unit on and record the 9pm EST replay show in half-hour segments with virtually flawless results. I was freezing at the dog logo once but a channel reset cleared that up.

I posted a long winded thing on my home dock issues last month. Noone responed. Since then I haven't really used the dock. I did some experimenting this weekend with some very short five and ten minute blocks spaced five minutes apart and ten minutes apart. No problem, woke up recorded went to sleep etc..... My original problem was when I was trying to do stern in three two hour blocks with five minutes inbetween. I have not yet tried that again. While my car dock had no problems my home dock did. I don't know if you would call it freeze up. When I would get home my dock would be asleep and when I turned it on it would say something like "about to record incomplete show do you want to continue". It occured to me that maybe it was due to loss of reception at some point during the recording. I'm still trying to figure out if that was it since other attempts to record with shorter time periods works. I will note that my dock does Not go to sleep inbetwee blocks unless the time space is more than five minutes. If the time space is five minutes it just stays on untill then next block.

I've had no lockups with the home dock. I'm using a PNP2 car antenna with it.

Apparently, Sirius sold me a west coast home kit in Florida.

Despite the fact that I'm supposed to have it pointing north, it only works when pointed south.

I had it in a closed window/sill in an apartment facing south. Never had a reception issue.

I just moved to a house where the yard points north, and I have to flip it around and point it the other way to get reception, which has been occasionally spotty.

Weird.

Thanks bclbob.....I think I'm gonna try the car antenna. One question...do you use the wake up function or is yours on all the time in the home dock?

Either. I've not had a lockup, though I've had the occasional missed recording - I record Stern from 5-6:30 and then that lets me listen to Stern on the way into work on the train. Works great.

I always remove power from the home dock before I undock the radio and always put the radio in the dock and then apply power. I don't know if thats the trick or not.

I have this problem everyday. I have stern scheduled for 6-730 and when I go to take it out a little after 730, the heart is still there and it appears to be still recording. I can't save the recorded parts ( it won't allow me to save it, so If I pull it out, I lose the content). Sometimes, I just leave it in and when I come home from work, the heart goes away and it is saved. However, some of the portions of the show skip, so I think the problem is the signal is lost due to the bad antenna and it causes the freeze up.

Default Terk outdoor antenna

I have been recording 6 one hour blocks with 1 minute intervals in between with great results. I record the live version so it has bookmarks. I like the one hour intervals for finding sections easily. The terk outdoor antenna has 100 percent signal strength.

I'm really close to concluding that the home dock freeze ups are simply the fault of the crappy home dock antenna. I think that even if you're not getting complete drop offs in signal, something about these antennas is messed up just enough to cause the freezes. It's the only thing that makes sense. My s50 never freezes out of the dock, and I never had these problems in the car dock with the car antenna. Pair that with the fact that at least a few people that aren't having problems with the home dock are using antennas other than the one that comes with it, and I don't see what else could be happening.

What's more troubling is that Sirius should just be giving us all free car antennas to fix the problem, but the best anyone has been able to get out of them is a $20 rebate on a car antenna. I think I'll try later today and see if I can get a free one out of them. I can be a pretty huge pain in the ass to CSRs when it comes to these things, and this is ridiculous.
