Default S50 question from a newbie

First off let me start by saying I want to thank this group for existing and answering so many questions Siruis related. I've been a lurker for a while.

I currently have a Xact XTR1 with the pod and boombox and the Kenwood KDC-X889 in dash unit for the car. I am curious how the S50 works in situations like working out in a gym that has no windows. I would love to listen to the replay of Howard Stern while working out if I can get the reception. If not can it record the whole Stern show without running out of space? I really want to replace the XTR1 with a new unit but am iffy on the S50. Maybe I will wait for a newer unit to come out.

A portable "live" unit won't hit until summer or later. The S50 must be docked to get the live stream (home dock, car dock, executive dock). You will have to record stern and listen while working out. Keep in mind that the S50 ships with the car dock and that it does not wake up to record. The home dock and the Executive dock will do this.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will wait for the newer units to hit the market. I would have trouble recording the show without a timer. Oh well, still love my Sirius.

The S50 can record the entire Stern show just in 2 hr blocks. That's the longest you can schedule a recording for. You might need 3 blocks. The unit itself has a gig of space so you could hold a weeks worth or more of shows. Once recorded you could replay them without the docking station. You just cannot listen to live content, only stuff you've recorded. and cannot be recording any other material while out of the dock.

The one thing you have to relieze is that you can only play the recorded content from the s50 that recorded it. You cannot copy the files to a PC and play from a PC or any other MP3 player. The only way to do that is to Play from your S50 the files and Re-record in real time into a PC. Here is where you could combine the 3 files into one MP3 file. The problem is it will take 6 hours to do it because you must play the files not copy them and convert them.

The S50 has a encryption scheme that stores the files in a special .pac format that is unique to each S50. The key to the encryption is generated when the unit is reset in some manner. There have been issues you can read on the forum where people's encryption keys have somehow changed on the fly making all recorded content worthless as it won't replay.

You can fix that problem but you loose all your recorded content.

If you wait until the new units come out, you may still be out of luck. There is talk that the new units will not "Save" content but will allow you to Buy content. Also even though it will be able to receive live content without the dock, It or any other radio will not work if you are inside a building without reception.

The best bet might be to wait until live content is streamed across the internet ( sometime in june) Then connect a FM modulator to a computer and rebroadcast the signal. That way when working out a standard FM radio would work for your workout sessions.

Sorry the post is so long. I hate long posts.

Mike

Note that you may have trouble listening to one of the "live" portables in a gym with no windows. Sat signals do not like to go through metal or concrete. Depending on the repeaters and their strength in your area, you may be successful, but the odds are against you.

The S50 does have a timer and allows you to schedule recordings, it is just that the car dock does not wake up to record, it has to be powered on at the time the recording starts. The solution to this (for those that use the car dock and not the home/executive dock) is to just leave the unit on all night to record Howard in the morning.

I think my S50 has like 3 days of 4 hour Stern shows on it right now. I wouldn't worry about running out of space.

I have 5 days, 6 hours each of Stern every week. I delete on Sunday for the coming week. The only time I saw it start to make space was one time I forgot to delete and it started automatically deleting the oldest recordings about Wednesday of the second week.

IMO, there's advantages to listening to the show recorded vs. getting live reception. Like Tivo or DVR, you can rewind if you miss something, skip commercials and listen on your schedule. I LOVE having the show clipped to my belt under my control. The times that I've missed the show and tried to catch parts on the replays was very frustrating. I only caught part of the John Daly interview due to a signal drop and its been a pain trying to catch the rest.

Possible cheaper options, since you already have a Sirius device at home would be to buy an FM transmitter if you don't have one and an MP3 recorder with FM radio and stream the show to that or a line-in to a program on your PC like AudioGrabber and save it to MP3. Of course that could be more of a hassle than just popping the top off of the S50 and hitting the gym.

What I do have is an FM tuner in my PC. It's an ATI card with an FM tuner that I can record with to MP3. Does the S50 have an fm transmitter? If so I can probably play through the PC tuner and record it. That may work. Iam pretty sure I can set the timer on the FM tuner to record. I haven't played with it much.

The S50 by itself does not have a fm transmitter, the Car Dock does. If you want to use it inside, you will need to get a 5v transformer. They sell it as an option. Also you might get the Home Dock Antenna as your car antenna is probably wired to your car.

Instead of a Home Dock, Sirius sells the Car Dock kit. It's the same price, you just need the extra power supply.

I'm sure your ATI card has a audio input, you could just hard wire the output from the ear phone, or the audio out from any of the Docks. Why use FM? Unless your recording software only can do that.

Good Luck!
