Default Win XP Pro not recognizing S50

I've seen similar threads but nothing that completly fit my problem.

I'm running Win XP Pro, my usb ports all function properly, i've upgraded MSS to the latest version, i've tried the uninstall/reinstall option, i've tried the "unplug usb from comp.-usb from s50-restart...." method but I HAVE NOT tried the three finger salute.

My problem is that my computer recognizes the S50 so far as the safely remove hardware tool is concerned but upon trying to view it by clicking on the "my computer" icon the computer freezes up. I also can not safely remove the S50 from my computer. Also, MSS won't recognize the S50. MSS tries to view the contents of the s50 but the "connecting" icon pops up and just stares at me and eventually freezes up MSS. Also, my computer will not restart with the S50 connected to the usb port.

I havnen't tried the three finger salute becasue it seems like after you done with everyting you still need your computer to recognize the s50 properly. So I don't want to screw it all up for nothing.

I have never connected my s50 to the computer, or anyone elses for that matter. This is my first time trying. I have the car dock only and it has work reasonably well . (Although the ff/love buttons seem to not work after a period of 5 hours of continuous listening, but this problem is fixed by pulling the plug or battery.)

So, what do you think?

This problem is most likely with the computer, and NOT the S50, so a 3 Finger Salute will probably not help. This is strange because it appears that the OS acknowledges that it is physically attached, but you cannot access the device. Is it plugged in directly to one of the computer's USB ports, and NOT a hub?

Short of reloading Win XP on the computer, I don't have anything specific for you to try. If you have access to another computer, I would try that before doing ANYTHING drastic like a 3FS on the S50.

Good luck!

I had very similar problem, MSS would just lock on "connecting" and same OS you have. But my s50 would work on a buddies computer with XP home. So I'd just go to his house for updates. But over the months a got it to work on XP pro.

For some reason, it would connect to computer and the safe to remove icon would appear in task bar and show s50, but on "My Computer" it wasn't listed as a drive. I had quite a few drives listed with partioned hard drives and a few virtual drives. So I went into disk management and found s50 and had to physically assign the s50 a drive letter.

Now that got the s50 on the drive tree with a letter drive. But my MSS still just sat on"connecting" with the s50. I'd tried reinstalling with website version of CD and update version over the past months with no sucess. Recently I did a reinstall of MSS, except this time I intalled it onto another drive that my XP Pro OS wasn't on. And after that MSS connected fine to S50.

Don't know why it didnt connect installing MSS on the default drive that OS was on. I had a gig of free space. But putting it on another drive which had 20 gigs of space seem to fix my computer connecting woes.

Hope it works for you.
