Default Live reception on a plane?

Didn't find this on any search. Maybe it's a dumb question but has anybody ever tried live reception on an airplane? I guess set the antenna next to the window and use the power adaptor in the seat to power the car dock? I'm going to be traveling during the Cowboys game next Sunday night and sure would love to hear the game live while in the air.

I see articles on the Stiletto but not on the S50-and still not on whether it works on an airplane. Searched the whole blog and still no results. Anything else?

Exclamation

I believe that it is against FAA Regulations to operate any radio device on a commercial airline. I suggest that you check with the airline before you try this as it may be unsafe.

Not sure why a lot of planes have onboard XM and Direct TV.

Cool

Planes that provide Satellite on the flights have antennas attached to the outside of the plane which are designed not to interfere with the electronics within the plane. Just like the cell phones that they provide at your seat yet, as a passenger you are not permitted to turn your cell phone on while in flight.

This will change soon... the FCC and FAA are in discussions to allow cell phone usage on planes.

If this truly was a danger, terrorists would be dropping planes everyday... Even the FAA admits that there has never been an air accident caused by a cell phone.

It's just a load of bunk...

I don't think it's TOTAL bunk, I seem to remember they did something on "Mythbusters" that showed it COULD cause the navigation to read inaccurately.............it's been a while, so can't say for sure....

When the stiletto came out a few SBS users posted their experiences on the airplane's mostly with success depending on which side of the plane you were on. There still is some legality issues about whether it is ok to use, but If you can get the s50 powered correctly, Remeber it uses 5V not 12V, and connect a home dock or car dock antenna I'm pretty sure it should work. Actually with a longer antenna cable it might give you some flexibility.

Take it with you and post your results.

How funny would that be with a magnetic car antenna stuck on the top of the plane with a black wire routed around the fuselage and through the cabin door then under the carpet to seat 17F?

hmm, this is interesting the FAA is more vague about the use of radios on an airplane than I had thought:
Quote:
Radios and other portable electronic devices, such as computers and headphones (regular or noise cancelling), are permitted if the operator of the aircraft determines they will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system.

The pilot-in-command has final authority on electronic devices operated onboard any aircraft at any time.

I saw that episode of Mythbusters.

They were not able to test it in-flight FCC rules. But, they did test it on a private jet on the ground. And it did nothing at all to any of the interments.
However, Grant did put together a mockup of a small prop plane and it did affect it. So if the wiring is properly shielded it's not a problem.

There was somebody a while ago that was selling, on eBay, a way to get live reception with the S50. I did a search and couldn't find it. Basically they just had a battery pack hooked up to the car dock and the antenna. You can put the antenna in between the window and the shade and you will get reception. I have tried it with the Stiletto but I didn't get good reception all of the time; of course it depends what side of the plane you are on.

I listened to the Cowboys-Giants game while flying to the west coast last week without a hitch. I wedged the headphones at the window by putting the antenna part underneath the lip of the window shade. Worked great.
