Default S50 Is Definitely A Defective Unit (and Sirius Won't Admit It)

I usually don't rant and/or complain but after all of the problems I have had this week (in getting "no signal") and then speaking with Sirius Product Support - I am convinced that they have to know the problems associated with the S50 but have chosen to do nothing about it. I have had my S50 for a year - relatively problem-free; however, I started having this problem the past few days and fortunately (for the most part) doing a channel reset has temporarily fixed the problem (although I still get sporadic outages). All Sirius was willing to do was send out a replacement unit that had been refurbished. That's exactly what I needed: someone else's problems. I asked if I could upgrade to the Stilleto (by paying the difference) but they refused - saying "the S50 is a good product with no known problems associated with it"! I guess no one can say that Sirius doesn't stand behind its products - even if it's way back!

after reading several negative posts about loosing all the songs for no reason, this 3 finger salute nonsense, shutdown and won't record problems the UNOPENED received package was returned to sender yesterday. I will keep my faithful Xact (starmate) replay until they pry it from my dead cold hands . I have no regrets.

When working, the S50 is a great radio, the issues around its relielabilty have always been in question.

At least now the firmware has settled down and the hangups are few and far between. This time last year, we were all screaming and waiting two more weeks for the firmware upgrade.

Then there was the firmware upgrade that fried many peoples car docks....

Oh the memories....

Well I'm now waiting for my 6th unit after the current "replacement" froze on the start up screen. I tried to upgrade to a Stiletto and was told by Warranty Support that I could, when I was transfered to Customer care I was told I could not, when I asked to speak to a supervisor I was told there were none available, I then asked for the name of the CSR I was talking with and she hung up on me! So the saga continues......

Yeah, most people have just given up on these radios. That's why you aren't hearing as much. Folks have moved on to the Stiletto which is what the S50 should have been in the first place.

I don't know if i would say "most people". there are several threads in here where users like me that went thru the early torture are buying additional S50s now that the price has dropped and the firmware has stabilized. It also has better song saving capabilities than the Stiletto.

My 1st post hello....I have a S50 under my tree. Should I be worried or what? Is this thing really a piece? I bought it because of the $79 price for my 2nd vehicle. Thanks!

Since me and my g'f's 1 year subs were expiring this week, we decided to go ahead and do the lifetime plan. And this is while we're still using our S50's from last December that have given us zer0 problems so far, thankfully.

We figured wth, why go yearly when in 3 years we can be listening for free. We may not be listening on our same S50's lol but, we get 3 free radio unit swaps before being charged a fee anyway, and in 3 years, some really nice units should be out. Gonna ride our S50's till they drop also.

We almost got 2 Stilettos but we both aren't close enough to use any WiFi coverage at our places of employment so, we decided to wait and see what develops in the next year or so. 'Till then, go S50!

I believe that each transfer is $75 unless it is a warranty issue. Also, after the three swaps the lifetime sub needs to be renewed.

I had wondered about that also MM. I thought I had heard that the first 3 were free, and when I asked CS about being charged the $75 fee, the Customer Service babe said yes, that is correct, you're not gonna be charged until after the 3rd swap.

Then again, maybe she just didn't know what the deal really was. lol Anyway, we hung up from her thinking that we're getting 3 free swaps. Guess we'll find out when we have to do it if it's true or not.

SIRI, let us know. If that's the case I might consider changing as well.

FWIW...i just swapped from a Clarion Calypso to the S50 under the lifetime plan (almost 2 years in) and they did not charge me.

Just sayin, that's what it appears like to me. Personally, I still have my first S50. Sure, I've had issues here and there (the shutting off by itself one the most bothersome) but otherwise I really haven't had a problem. I've been thinking of buying another just to tinker with (READ: tear it apart).
