Default Total loss of satellite signal

Has anyone else gotten a sudden total loss of satellite signal? My home and car docks were both working fine this afternoon, but when I powered up my s50 in my car tonight, I had no satellite signal. When I try to do a channel reset, I get a constant please wait message.

Same situation on my home dock that was also working perfectly earlier today.

Prerecorded material plays fine - I am just getting NO satellite reception.

I listened to my satellite tonight in the car and now it is working in my home dock with 3 bars.

Check the antenna.
Remove the battery and reset.

I did a couple of battery removals and a default reset (that worked) to no avail. But the channel reset is the weird one - I've done that successfully in the past when I've had flaky signal problems, and it has always brought operation back to normal.

But I've never seen a total loss of satellite signal. It's hard to believe that antennas that have worked perfectly for over a year in BOTH my house and car would fail simultaneously.

Something strange going on here.

Thanks for your replies, but it appears I have yet another defective S50.

I called and asked customer service to try and resend my channels, but they couldn't since the satellite can't see my receiver. Customer service agreed it is unlikely that both of my previously working antennas failed at the same time, and also suggested that my s50 had just `shit the bed.' (my term, not exactly theirs). The very friendly dude I spoke with there suggested before returning it again to Best Buy that I check with tech service in the morning (I realize it's xmas day) for any ideas they might have.

Next, my dilemna is do I now do the inevitable Stiletto upgrade, or try yet another S50 until the bugs in the Stilettos are worked out?

Guess things could be worse - I could be in Iraq or Stern might not be on vacation this week!

I believe what is happening to you has happened to me and countless others during the past week (and Sirius CS still states there is nothing inherently wrong with the S50) - check some of the posts below that states "no signal". My S50 worked perfectly for a year - then last week I got a "no signal"; yet, when I check the antenna strength it was at or near 80%. Mine began working again but I still get the "no signal" occasionally. BTW, when I called Sirius - they said my unit was history and they wanted to send me a replacement unit. It was however a refurbished unit which I politely refused.

Nope, this appears to be a totally new problem.

I'm getting invalid channel on every station, no sound at all on channel 184, and no satellite signal at all (on either the home or car dock). Almost as if the satellite chip all of a sudden went south? Again, recorded stuff - shows and songs - play perfectly.

I too started getting the `no signal' thing recently, but only sporadically. Pulling the battery and/or doing a channel reset always corrected the no signal defect for me. This is not a `no signal', it's some sort of no satellite.

Any solutions to your problem?

I just set up my new S50 last night for the first time after receiving it yesterday. It worked fine last night and this morning. I went to lunch and noticed a No Signal error. Then I noticed the unit would not display the Sirius ID. It took all of 13 hours for this POS to become a true S50 and crap out.

Thumbs down

nafdurr - I am having the exact problem you are experiencing. No audio on channel 184, no satellite signal, and the "channels not available" prompt. 13 hours of life (30 minutes of actual use) and this thing is toast.

You mean the `exact problem I WAS experiencing.' Sirius finally said to just do a warranty exchange. Since there were no available S50's in my area at that time, I took the plunge, splurged for the $20 price differential (and, of course, $140 for the 2 new docks) and switched to a Stiletto. So far so good - my old S50 antennas (car and home) work perfectly with the Stiletto - proving the problem I had (and you are apparently having) was indeed in the receiver.

You're right, your symptoms are EXACTLY the same as mine were. Strange how these types of problems seem to be happening so much more frequently now. Both in new (as in yours) and older (mine had worked nearly perfectly since June) receivers.

I bet you're happy that you are free of the S50. After 3 days and only 30 minutes of use I am planning on taking this POS back for a refund. I have 2 Xact Visors that have given me zero problems over the past 15 months and will be going back to the Xact. Best of luck with the Stiletto. BTW, how does the Stiletto compare in size to the S50?

I am shocked that a company would continue to market such an unreliable product. I am pissed that I missed sites such as this before I bought this radio. I should have know it was crap when I received the package and the seal mentioned that I would not be able to return it for a refund if I broke the seal (Tigerdirect.com).

OMFG, it IS fantastic to finally have a quality, reliable (high end) Sirius receiver. I still miss the clock and the ability to save individual songs from replays, but other than that the Stiletto (IMHO, of course) is far superior to the S50. And I have rarely used it so far as a portable receiver, and have yet to even try the Wifi.

As for the size, the Stiletto is slightly larger in every dimension - but certainly not objectionably larger. For us older dudes used to old, large devices like 35 mm cameras, the Stiletto is tiny.

And you're also right, Yeg, many of us previous S50 users have been preaching for over a year here how crappy those receivers are. Thank god for those extended big box store warranties that enabled immediate, on the spot exchanges (at least till the stores ran out of s50's).
