Default newbie help or advise

Trying to figure out if my new S-50 that I got for x-mas is defective or not. I tried to install it last night. Using the car dock kit, I plugged everything in and the display came on and said something about updating and the counted the percentages. After that finished, it tuned to channel 184 and I was listening to weather stuff. At that point, I did the service activation. After that was done, I waited about 10 minutes and tried to change the channel. Nope, nothing works, can't change the channel, none of the buttons work, can't power off, it seems like it's froze. So I take the battery out for about 10 seconds, put it back in and now it won't power on at all, totally dead. I take a break and after a few hours, I go back and try to get it to work again. This time, I take the battery out for about ten minutes then reinstall it. Plug everything back in and it's working! Yea, all the buttons work, I can change channels, set the timezone all seems fine. I'm scrolling through the channels and then all of the sudden, it hangs again! Nothing works again. Can't power off so I take the battery out again. Leave out for a minute or so but still will not work when I try again. So I load the Sirius software and attach it to the usb port of my computer thinking I would reload the software. Wrong, computer does not see the S-50. Reboot, unplug, nothing helps. Frustrated, I remove the battery again and I call it a night. This AM, put battery back in, use the usb cable and AC adaptor to try and charge the battery. No inducation from the S-50 that anything is going on. It's on the charger for about 30 minutes. After I remove it, the S-50 receiver (top part) still will not power on when I push the playlist/on off button. I take it out to my car, put it in the doc, connect all the cables and it come on, everything seems to work great my entire drive to work. So I guess my question is, do you think this unit is defective, is it a case of user error or just quirky stuff on the S50 that I have to put up with? Sorry this got so long. Any thoughts or advise would be great!

The S50 is definitely quirky. Is this S50 from a local store or was it bought online?

Quirky is definitely par for the course with the S50. If you get it to be recognized on the PC, make sure that the firmware is up to date.

Good answer, good answer!!! Now, do you have the multi-year warranty? If not, BUY IT NOW!!! Best $30 you will EVER spend. S50's either work perfectly or they don't. Get the warranty and return, return, return until you get one that works perfectly. Good ones are out there but you might have to go through a few to find one. Go TONIGHT and spend the $30 to get the 2 year warranty.
