Default "USB device not recognized" error

I just got this s50 on Christmas eve... it worked fine... now when I plug it into my USB port I get this error... it says "The usb device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it". Anyone else ever get this? I talked to Sirius for over an hour... they said the only way to fix it is to download a few things from their website and then PLUG IT INTO THE USB PORT to load those things... that's what I CAN'T do... now they're telling me to just return it to the store and exchange it... all fine and dandy except that they're out of stock and if it's not activated by 12/31 then she doesn't get her $100 rebate... Has anyone ever heard of this error?

Ugh.... I have this EXACT error!! My S50 is still sitting here in a bag because of this. I use the Stiletto now but can't even give the S50 to my g/f to use as an MP3 player because it won't connect. Oh, and I've tried it on many computers and have uninstalled, reinstalled the software multiple times, tried all the updates, 3-finger salute... EVERYTHING! This error is about the only problem I've ever not been able to get answered. My only suggestion is, if you bought it locally, return it. Also, with the S50, make sure you get an extended warranty.

And why can't you activate it? It doesn't have to be connected to the computer to activate. What store did you buy it from? Can you just return it for cash and then buy it somewhere else?

it was bought at a Circuit City.... the rebate for $100.00 is through sirius and the radio has to be activated by 12/31... problem is if we activate it and then send in the upc for the warranty then I can't return it to the store because it has to have the upc code on it... upc can't be in two places at one time :OP We called Sirius and they put a note on her account (she already has an s50 for herself) that even if it's after 12/31 that they will honor the $100 rebate.... so tomorrow I'm returning it to Circuit City and getting the $$ out of it... then as soon as I can find one to buy I'll get it and give her the upc and then she can activate it and get her rebate... does this make sense?

Have you tried uninstalling the USB driver?

1: Get to the System Properties via the Control Panel or pressing the Start (aka Windows) Key and Break button together (on your keyboard).

2: Go to the Hardware tab on the System Properties window.

3: Click on Device Manager

4: Go to the bottom of the Device Manager where the USB items are listed. Expand the list by clicking on the "+" symbol on the left side and find the USB device that coincides with the S50. If it has a generic name, you may need to unplug the S50 and plug it back in to see what changes on the list.

5: Once you've found it, right-click on it and select properties from the menu.

6: Click on the driver tab from the Device Properties window.

7: Click on the Uninstall button. It will probably ask you if you're sure, you are.

8: Unplug the S50 and plug it back into a different USB port.

If that doesn't do it, repeat the steps to uninstall the driver, then restart the computer between steps 7 and 8.

Just FYI: Not all USB ports are created equally. Some are on the main bus, some are on secondary busses and usually suck. The main bus ports are almost always together as a pair on the back panel.
