Unhappy Computer does not recognize s50

Okay, I'm an idiot. I have had my s50 for a year and never tried updating.

Last night I decided to and boy am I sorry.

I've now tried on two computers using XP and neither recognizes the unit. I'm using XP and tried disabling Norton as well. Called tech support and they walked me thru the 3 finger method, but then have no clue why computer does not recognize unit. So now I am halfway through, with a unit that does not work, and no way to update. Help!

Are you using the current MSS software?

Default I'm having the same problem, but only on my laptop.

The sirius studio program just displays the "connecting" message without completing the connection to the device, so I cannot transfer files to the s50 or edit it's settings from my laptop computer.
Strange thing is, it works on my other computer at home. Is there some sort of connection setting or version with the USB on my laptop that's keep it from connecting. I have a similar problem with my digital camera. The laptop does not see it as an external hard drive device like my other computer does, so I cannot retrieve pictures from the camera with my laptop. sounds like the same problem exists. Anyone have ay ideas??

Maybe a Windows update will help.

I can't speak specifically to the S50 as I have since upgraded to the Stiletto, but I can tell you that WMP11 has caused many issues with these devices connecting. If you have it installed, you may try to do a roll back to WMP10 and see what that does for you.

I'm on WMP 10 right now with my laptop, so, maybe it's not that.
I did speak to a sirius tech support person on the phone a couple of days agos, and he said it could be a problem with my laptop's USB type?? (He mentioned something about "type 1 or 2"). Again, it seems like I have a similar problem with my olympus digital camera not showing up in my windows file explorer. The weird thing is, if I look in the windows control panel in the hardware manager section, the computer sees the S50 and declares it as working properly, so I'm totally confused. I just did a windows update. let me try that and get back with you guys if it made a difference. What's really frustrating is, it seems like this problemis not that common with S50 users. I've been googling the topic for a while now, and this was the only thread I ever found with someone else have the same/similar problem.

Clearly if you are having problems with other devices showing up this is a computer related issue. My WMP11 theory was just a possibility.

Make sure you are using the S50 version of MSS (v1.0.2) and not the Stiletto version (v1.1) if you've downloaded from the website. If you're using the Stiletto version make sure you have downloaded the S50 driver on the Sirius webpage.

I have now tried this on 5, count them, 5 different computers. 3 of which have WMP10. I disabled Norton while downloading and installing the software. I have downloded current MSS software, removed, and re-installed it again. (This is the first thing tech support tells you to do, which by the way alerts me that this is a POS of a program)

I rolled back one of the WMP11 machines and tried that as well.

I'd like to think that at least 1 of the pc's would recognize it. But I am so thoroughly pissed right now that Sirius hasn't gone further to make this work. I have spent hours on this and I don't really want to have to buy a Stiletto, have it installed, run cables to the antenna hookup in my car (Lexus ES350) because they no longer make an FM transmitter strong enough to reach 1 foot. Not to mention the fact that I spent $300 on this paperweight just 1 year ago!

Four desktops and a laptop. Not one of them recognizes the s50. Not one. All XP, 1 sony and 4 hp's.

Unhappy

Well, the windows update does not seem to work. I'm still getting the "Connecting" message that does not go away, so no connection to the S50. I'm wondering if it's either some sort of security/firewall type setting on my work laptop. We do have a lot of network drive connections at work, so maybe the laptop is blocking out all other external hard drives for security reasons......or something. At least I can connect my S50 to my home desktop computer, so it's definitely not a problem with the Sirius S50 unit. Only other thing that might have caused the problem, was I started loading the Sirius studio program with the S50 already plugged into my laptop's USB port. I noticed later on the instructions that you are not supposed to have it plugged in till the program has finished loaded. I removed the program from the laptop and reloaded with the S50 unplugged. I also turned off all other programs and Anti-virus utilities.......but still no luck with the laptop!
Looks like I might have to have a chat with our network admin person at work??
does this all sound familiar, Stardoggie??

I have tried at both places, home and work. Tried it connected and disconnected. Tried it with the program already opened, and closed. Nothing worked. It just seems that of all of the computers I tried it on, 1 of them should have worked. I really believe that when I called customer support that they led me in the wrong direction by having me do the three finger salute before knowing what the real issue was. Her response after doing that when the unit wasn't being recognized was to call HP and see what the problem is, there was nothing else they could do.

Before I did the three finger salute, the unit was working. A little buggy, but working.

I see new S50's on ebay for about $150, but why throw good money after a bad product? I bought a Stiletto 100 yesterday, with an extended warranty.

My last S50 wouldn't connect to any computer (not recognized/device malfunction error) and I was never able to fix it. Tried everything suggested in this thread and then some. You were smart to go with the Stiletto. Far, far better device.

I like it much better already. Like the S50 remote better though.

Great that the Stiletto is working for you Stardoggie!
I was also looking a the Stilettos, but I found it priced beyond my budget. The bigger size of the unit also does not work as well for my small car's interior (Scion tC). I also like the S50's very slick styling better than other Sirius players, including the Stiletto. Now if I can also get the Stiletto for $78 bucks, I would also have jumped on it anyway at the end of the holidays!
I was also able to snag an executive boombox for the S50 for $80. So, despite the problem with connecting to my work my laptop, I think I'm doing pretty good so far with the S50. I'm still debating weather to get a second unit as a spare for $78 as a spare, in case my unit "bricks" on me in the future. I still know of a few available out there at my local CC and BB stores. $78 bucks is just soooo cheap for a complete car system.
Anyway, I think the problem might have to do with the interface program (The Portal Player's service provider) not loading right that might be causing the problem with my laptop. Just curious, do you also have problems connecting to digital cameras through your USB ports?

No problems connecting anything else. That is what was so frustrating.

I have to tell you, the display on the Stiletto looks very good, and it basically mounted on the same vent mount that I had the S50 on. Same cables, everything. Even the fm transmitter seems to work ALMOST as well as the S50 did. I will probably have that hard-wired with the FM adapter though so I can eliminate all of the static all of the time. On the cradle it is not as long as the S50 was, but just a tad wider. At least that is the perception I have.
