Default Regionalized Sports Talk

I think it would be an awesome idea to have a set of regional sports talk channels (with play-by-play). Sports is still fundamentally local and a closer-to-local focus would make the content much better (especially if the expense was taken to build studios in the field), as well as, from the business side, allow for better ad sales.

So, here goes... basically I gave each stream an approximately equal weighted team total... NFL, NBA, and NHL teams count double. I ignored college, though you could add in schools that Sirius has play-by-play deals with.

#1: Sirius Sports California
#2: Sirius Sports West (everything from Denver west not in California)
#3: Sirius Sports Southwest (Texas, Missouri, New Orleans, Memphis)
#4: Sirius Sports Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana)
#5: Sirius Sports South (Florida, Atlanta, Nashville)
#6: Sirius Sports Lakes (Detroit, Ohio, Buffalo)
#7: Sirius Sports Mid-Atlantic (North Carolina, Balt/Wash, Philly [Pittsburgh would be either here or in Lakes... I can see strong cases for either])
#8: Sirius Sports Northeast (New England, New York)

Play-by-play from that region would be prioritized to these streams (ie Celtics, Knicks, Nets, Bruins, Isles, Rangers, Devils, Patriots, Jets, Giants games would be on the Northeast channel unless the channel was unavailable). Combine with promotional blitzes in the major markets (signing major sportswriters and personalities for shows) and it would be a great decision.

I like it, I still listen to local AM radio for sports news. I live in Kansas City and the station here is the best in the country for sports talk. It is the nations largest all sports station! They broadcast 50,000 watts during the day too and cover 5 states. Pretty darn good...

I listen to local sports talk programming that already gives me the local/regional teams. What's cool about Sirius sports programming is that you get a national view and you can hear games and get info about other regions. But, if this ever came about, I'd listen. It would be fun to hear talk about specific regions!

this is a great idea. it would also open up spots for local AM people to come over like mike and the mad dog from NY. NOW they would belong on Sirius Sports NE!

I don't think they need to devote entire channels to regions, but it would be nice for them to do regional sports shows.

This is an awesome idea! I would really like to listen to different local views from different parts of the country. For example, could you imagine how many people would have listened to the Philly channel a couple of weeks ago before TO was suspended. Then with the bowl announcements coming out in the next couple of weeks it would be interesting to be able to listen to the different views about match ups around the country.

I think sirius has shown that they are happy with what they have from a sportstalk perspective, which is unfortunate. I think that the chances that sirius would "sacrifice" the bandwith to regional sports talk is pretty slim. I am ok with that, as others have mentioned, I can hear local talk on my AM dial. I enjoy the national perspective that national nets give you. I also vote for Sporting News Radio...

good idea but isnt that what AM radio is for? that and I think the national association of broadcasters would fight regional programming tooth and nail. Lets not forget bandwidth issues too,.
