Default Football teams and their names

What is going on with the changing of the names to more PC names. With all this when are they going to change the name of the Steeler, as not to offend the steel workers of america? And how about the Miami Dolphins, arn't fish offended over this?

it's freaking unbalivable!

Your Steeler analogy was right on target! I feel the pain especially as a 'Skins fan. I really wish people would drop this whole PC team name thing.

Uhhhh.... Dolphins are mammals, not fish. Don't insult them any further by exploiting their existence with your foolish team name, and then calling them "fish". (/sarcmode)

I agree...it's all very stupid. I'm not native american so I can't speak on their behalf but I would think many of them are honored that sports teams are named after their tribes/cultures.

I'm a diehard Redskins fan, and my high school mascot was the Indian, so I'm torn here. But I try to put myself in the shoes of the native Americans - what if America were overrun today by people from another country, who took our land, gave us strange diseases that wiped out our populations, fought wars against us, made treaties with us that they broke, and then herded us all onto reservations to live in squalor? And then, after all that, they gave their sports teams the names of derogatory slurs they used against us, like the "Fighting Honkies" or the "Darkies?"

I think the Indians may have a point.

But the crazy part is that the Seminole Indians in Florida have said they don't mind that FSU uses that as their mascot/nickname. I think the Seminoles get some money too. Who is the NCAA to say that you can't use these names anymore. I will have to look, but Jeb Bush said some funny things about the decisions and how it affects the Seminoles.

"I think it's offensive to native Americans ... the Seminole Indian tribe who support the traditions of FSU," Bush said on his way into a Cabinet meeting. "I think they insult those people by telling them, 'No, no, you're not smart enough to understand this. You should be feeling really horrible about this.' It's ridiculous."

"How politically correct can we get?" Bush asked. "The folks that make these decisions need to get out more often."

"You know what they ought to be worried about? The graduation rates of most college athletes," the second-term Florida governor said. "Maybe if they had some suggestions on that, that universities could apply and could implement, they could be doing a service to all of us."

True story...

In the 60's, Cowboys owner Clint Murchison decided it would be fun to have Native Americans protest the Redskins. He asked his barber, a noted activist (it should be noted) and full-blooded Cherokee, what he thought of the idea. The barber said he'd protest the Redskins except for the fact that they were his favorite team!

Steelers is different than Redskins and you all know it. Naming a sports team after a persecuted group is just a bad idea.

What's the different between Washington Redskins and well let's say theIndiana Black People or the Illinois Jew Boys or the San Antonia Asains?

UB,

I think a lot of this is PC BS, but even *I* think "Redskins" is probably the worst one out there. I don't see how naming a team the Seminoles is offensive. What's the difference between that and the Trojans or any other group of people. It's not a slur (like "redskins" is).

What really gets me is when teams like Marquette Univ. change their name from the Warriors, because that is somehow offensive to Native Americans. Sure seems like "warrior" is a pretty generic term...why does it have to apply to native americans.

I'm part native american (my grandma was actually born on a reservation), but not enough to actually speak as if I am one.

The nickname "Redskins" is pretty damn offensive, let's not try and paint it as anything else. Now what was the idea behind the city of Washington D.C. and the NBA renaming the Washington Bullets to the Washington Wizards? Is a piece of led ammunition more offensive than the term "Redskin"? Talk about P.C. bullshit run amok! Is the anti-gun lobby stronger than the Native American lobby? I doubt it. And speaking of nicknames that were changed from years past... Anyone remember the Atlanta Crackers (Triple-A Baseball Team)? Before the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta, their baseball team was named "The Crackers". I happen to find a little irony in this.

I'll have to agree "Redskins" is a racial slur, kinda like a team named something like the "Nig......".

That being said, I don't have a problem with names like the Seminoles, Indians, etc. Besides, I think we have a lot of other things to worry about a lot more than this.

Perhaps I'm partial, but I really don't see it. It's like noting that Native American's skin is red, nothing else. Perhaps it was the big offensive word used bake in the day, I don't know?!

I really agree with the post above that states we have bigger fish to fry like perhaps curtialing terrorism and electing a President that has a better grasp of things. LOL Sorry W. fans.
