NHL announces 10-year deal with XM Satellite Radio
September 12, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL announced a 10-year, $100 million deal with XM Satellite Radio on Monday that begins this season and will make XM the league's exclusive satellite radio broadcast partner beginning with the 2007-2008 season.

XM will broadcast more than 1,000 games a season -- beginning with the Oct. 5 opening this year -- as well as the All-Star game, the Stanley Cup playoffs and the finals.

There will also be a channel devoted to the NHL that will feature original programming.

XM has more than 4.4 million subscribers.

I guess that after this season I am going to have to buy the DirecTV package because I am not buying another satellite radio system

Sirius will have the NHL for 2 more seasons, 05-06, 06-07 and then you can go buy your direct tv package.

Last time I bought it, it was $159.00 for a season from Comcast, with a early bird discount. I expect a ton of free previews, and a heavy discount this season.

Available from all providers, Cable, Dish network, and Direct TV.

I have bought the TV package in the past and will do so again this year, it was just nice to listen to the games if I was out running around in the car. When I was travelling to Dallas every week, it was nice to have, now that I am in Austin full time, I can watch the TV package more. It was one of the many reasons why I chose Sirius over XM. I lived without Avs games on radio before, and I guess I will in a couple of years...oh well.

Unfortunately this will affect the number of Sirius subs in Canada.

Hopefully Sirius can get a deal for CFL football.

Sirius should also look at getting the ontrack feeds for NHRA dragracing. With NASCAR coming to Sirius next year, they could be the home of US Motorsports.

Hate to see Sirius lose this, but I don't know of anyone that has Sirius for the NHL. I have a friend that is a huge hockey fan and he would not buy Sirius for the NHL. I guess the cost of season tickets doesn't leave much money for Satellite Radio.

I always found hockey very hard to follow on the radio, compared to TV/live - and usually the best time to watch hockey is during the playoffs - so you're talking about 6 weeks of content I would care that much about.

So long as they keep the NFL and March Madness. If they ever do pry MLB from XM, that would the ideal.

I wonder if the reason we lost it is because XM is giving the NHL its own channel. I mean did Sirius refuse to do that or what?

But Im not going to leave Sirius over this, we still have Americas sport...the NFL.

Now you do.....I got Sirius because of 2 things...the NFL and the NHL. Damn, I'm not happy with this at all. If I'm home and can watch the games on Center Ice, no problem but I work out of town alot and do a heavy amount of driving. Was looking forward to be able to listen to games while traveling. Crap.

I think it's only the upcoming season.

What I've read is that XM starts with the 2006-07 season.
