Default $4.00 Extra?!?!?

I am currently listening to Howard and Mel Karmazin is on speaking about the merger. He mentioned that it is going to cost an extra $4.00 if you have Sirius to get baseball and some of the other XM content and vise versa if you have XM and want Sirius content.

I thought the whole point of the merger was to save subscribers money. Instead, I have to pay $4.00 for the only content that XM has that I would ever want, baseball. I don't really like what I am hearing so far regarding this merger. I was looking forward to the "ala carte" programing and being able to pick what I want and not pay for what I don't.

The merger is good news, but it sounds like it's not going to be all that great for the subscribers.

$4 is a lot cheaper then $13 and buying a new radio... Also I'm guessing you could just add it for the season and then get rid of it, costing you ~$24/yr.

What the hell is the point of the merger then? I was using baseball as an example, but it sounds like we are going to have to pay for the content that we want from XM/Sirius rather than have it included in the price since they are the same company. I will be paying my monthly fee to the Sirius/XM and I would expect to recieve the best of both worlds now that they are merged rather than have to pay extra for what I want.

Complain all you want, but $4.00 a month is still a lot cheaper then paying $12.95 for a XM subscription (and the cost of the radio) to get your baseball.

This isn't new information. In fact, this has been known for quite some time, and what is the big deal? You're getting 10 of the "Best of XM" at $0.40 per channel. Is it any different than adding a premium channel package to your DirecTV?

The real question is what exactly will be offered from XM's side. So far, we know that Howard Stern will be part of the "SIRIUS Select" line-up. We'll just have to wait and see what will be available in the "XM Select" package.

Also, couldn't you just get the "XM News, Sports, Talk" package at $9.99 a month for the MLB? That would save you even more money if you subscribed only during the season.

As I mentioned, baseball was just an example. The point is that I shouldn't have to pay anything extra now that these two companies have merged. I can't believe you guys aren't pissed off by this.

I'm not pissed because I'm 100% happy with the Sirius programming that I've had for the last 2.5 years. But I also look at it from the standpoint of now being able to get the best programming of what is on XM for 1/3 of the monthly cost, and no upfront cost should they have something I might be interested in.

Were you actually listening to what Mel said? You will never have to pay extra for what you have now. You're just wanting everything for free.

Over a year ago, Sirius & XM announced post-merger pricing, and at that time they stated that exisiting customers' current pricing packages wouldn't change, but that if you made the CHOICE to add XM or Sirius (depending on your current provider), there would be additional cost. We're not pissed because the companies told us this was coming long ago. This is not news at all.

OK, what am I missing? What you have just explained IS ala carte.....you are paying for the services you'd want (baseball from XM and current programming from Sirius) and not paying for the ones you wouldn't (the rest of XM's programming).

Just out of curiosity, when Mercedes bought Chrysler did someone come around and give you a Mercedes to go with your Sebring? I'm only asking because it would have been really sweet.

This topic has been beaten to death here in "Merger Mania" and isn't really worth the effort again. If you feel the need to go tilting against windmills do a search and you can happily read all the other complaint posts.

What you should actually be worried about is the erosion of those stations that are included in Sirius. Think about it, where is all the bandwidth for new tiered services for dual chip radios going to come from? It's going to come from the elimination of existing stations on both services.

This information was known all along. It's not like they're duping us on this one.

Where have you been the last 18 months?? This "Best of [insert opposite service]" for +$4.00 has been around since the beginning of the merger!

And you heard him wrong: Gary asked, "If I'm a SIRIUS subscriber, how can I get baseball?" To which Mel responded, "Well, you can buy an XM radio and subscribe for $12.95." Which sounds like baseball will not be part of the "Best of XM" available to SIRIUS subscribers.

Howard, however, will be part of the "Best of SIRIUS", available to XM subscribers. I doubt NASCAR or NFL will be, though. I'm hoping once dual band radios hit the market, a "dual sub" deal will be worked out...say, $20 for EVERYTHING.
