Default YOUR Plans for a Sirius-XM Merger

Say Sirius and XM Merge, and you are in charge of deciding what programming stays and what programming goes.

What would the channel lineup look like? What would happen in each genre/category... for example, for early classic rock, would you keep Sirius Classic Vinyl, XM Top Tracks, or combine the two?

Would there be DJ's on the music channels?

This is just the programming aspect, not the technological aspect. But lets say you're limited to about 150 channels, which is roughly an average between the number on Sirius and the number on XM.

If they wanted to get really creative after any so called merger they’d make a dual band Sirius/XM receiver that offered both. So we’d get 200+ stations. That would be very cool and I’d be the first to replace my Alpine Tuner.

MONOPOLY results in higher prices. We will get screwed. If you think customer service is bad now, wait until you have no alternative. I left XM for Sirius. May wind up back with my IPod.

Yes, forget the whole ridiculous merger talk--that would be the logical way to go about it.

THANK YOU! I'm so glad someone finally realizes this! Competition is healthy. Competition is a good thing. It brings about low prices. It keeps technology on the cutting edge. And do you honestly think if a merger were to take place that all channels would remain intact...hell no! We'd most likely also end up losing a lot of good DJs too. And the really sad thing is that some people actually want this to happen simply because they want MLB...how sad is that?

This so-called merger is nothing but a bullshit rumor that won't die and threads like this do nothing but continue to fuel it.

I agree with the technology part, but as far as prices go... the thing is, with something like a cable TV monopoly, if people have no choice but to sign up with the local cable company who is charging a lot of money, they'll do so because otherwise they won't be able to watch the channels they want at all. If the cable company raises their rate from $45 to $50 and people have no other choice (no satellite available in the area, etc), existing subscribers will stay and new subscribers will still sign up. Same thing with phone monopolies before competition. If the phone company raised their rates, people had no choice because if they dropped the phone company they were with, they simply couldn't talk on the phone.

Even if there was only one large satellite radio company, though, the company would still be trying to attract people to the medium. Think of satellite radio as competing with terrestrial radio, iPods, CDs, etc. If satellite radio subscription rates got too high, new subscribers would not sign up, and existing subscribers would get their music/talk/entertainment from other mediums.

Maybe the merged satellite radio company could get away with raising their rate to $15 or something like that, since they can advertise that they have Howard, O&A, MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, everything. But when the subscription rates start going up by $5 or $10 a month, that's when people stop subscribing or don't sign up to begin with.

It's fun to talk about what we'd like to see out of an XM / Sirius merger, and in a perfect world we'd only get the best stuff from both companies, not have to change our radios and keep everything at the same cost.

Obviously in the real world this doesn't happen. If they did merge, it would take forever before they'd merge the content, that'd probably be the last thing to happen. Prices would definitely go up and as I hypothesized in the thread on the Insiders Blog forum, I'd expect that they'd go to a tiered, almost ala carte pricing scheme that mimics Cable and Satellite TV. A Basic sat radio package, a sports package, a premium entertainment package, etc, with a "works" package costing probably double of what we pay now.

Like others said, competition is in the customer's (our) interest. I don't think that a merger would simply mean that it would be Sirius + MLB at one great price.

At any rate, I doubt that a merger would ever make it all the way through. Too many obstacles to overcome. If the government didn't let Dish and Direct TV merge in the face of Cable TV and OTA broadcast competition and now IPTV, I doubt that it will let these two merge in the face of FM and ipod competition. I doubt that the government would even count the ipod as competition to sat radio. It will look as it as: "How many national pay for radio companies are there in the USA?" 2 merging into 1 -- I don't think it will ever happen. Doesn't mean they won't try though.

My plan is to have a cold beer tonight, and try to figure out which one this dual sub will enjoy!

A dual sub and a cold beer sounds great!

Make one an Italian sub, and the other roast turkey with provalone and avacodo on a hoagie bun.

Can I get some chips with that, please?

The bottom line is that we won't get something for nothing. Twice the programming will equal twice the cost. Maybe they'll evolve into something like a tiered system where you have a free or near-free advertiser based group of offerings, then a premium tier with all of the sports and commercial free stuff.

VERY INTERESTING.
