Default SL2 died ... got replacement in less than 24hrs

Yesterday morning my SL2 started shutting down all by itself. It would play for a few minutes then shutdown completely all by itself (not just going to sleep).

I tried reset and device recovery (twice). No improvement. Finally I called Sirius support. I explained the problem. The rep told me to go back to "Future Shop" where I bought the unit less than a year ago and ask for a replacement unit then to call back to transfer my lifetime sub.

Today at lunch time I went to Future Shop. They took back the dead SL2 and I walked out with a new one. They even allowed me to buy an extended warranty (3 years), which I gladly did. Usually, you have to buy it within 30 days of purchase (silly me for thinking when I bought the SL2 that a 300$+ electronic gadget would last long).

Called back Sirius, and within a couple of minutes, my new SL2 was up and running. I guess I'll have to start catching those loved tunes from scratch again.

Lesson learned: don't ever buy the SL2 (and successors) without ext warranty.

Default breaking the SL2 on purpose

I was recently asked, "If I bought an SL2 without warranty, is there a way I can break the SL2 to have them replace it under the year warranty?"

Allanon, I had a similar experience with my old Sportster when the back light stopped working. As soon as I found a Future Shop with one in stock, they just exchanged it with a brand new one even though mine was over 7 months old and without all of the parts. I ended up with a brand new radio and an extra antenna, remote, etc.

It's a great experience but it's important to clarify. That was because it was within one year manufacturer's warranty and that's how Sirius Canada handles it. They don't have you send it back and in return you get a refurb etc like they do in the US. They just have you exchange it for a brand new unit at the place you bought it from. Your experience is nothing to do with the Future Shop warranty or the extended warranty.

Now if it's past your 1 year manufacturer's warranty and you try to exercise your Future Shop extended warranty, it's a completely different situation. What they do is send it out for repair no matter what. This can be for up to 60 days at a time and they don't provide any loaner in the meantime. They say that if they don't have it back to you within the 60 days, they'll replace it. I thought I was close once on a Palm Pilot but they called on the 57th day.

If their repair didn't actually fix the problem you have 30 days to bring it back and they will try again to fix it. They can repeat that two times before the "no lemon" policy kicks in and they replace it. If you wait more than the 30 days, and then bring it back you're back to square one on the replacement count.

So when you take into account that they can keep it for 2 months times 3 repair attempts, it means that you can be without your device for up to 6 months before they will replace it. Very different to the policies in the US. And you're still paying your Sirius subscription fee that whole time.

After the Palm Pilot lesson, I was buying a PVR at Future Shop and the guy tried to tell me that I couldn't afford to be without my PVR (ExpressVu) and hence TV signal so I should have an extended warranty. So I asked him what happens if it breaks and he explained the same thing: it goes out for repair, they can keep it for 60 days, and that can happen 3 times! I laughed at him and said "you just told me that I needed this PSP so I don't loose my TV yet you then explained that it could mean that I'm without TV for 6 months"!! He stopped pushing the PSP at that time.

I took my SL100 in on Sunday to Best Buy (as per my other post about problems with it). I don't have an extended warranty and it's about 22 months old but because my wife paid for it on her VISA card, the extended warranty from VISA which is free kicks in. So VISA will cover my repair charge. But BB won't even guarantee me the 60 days anymore: now they say 6-8 weeks. And if they can't repair it, then the VISA extended warranty covers the replacement. Hence I bought my S2 the same day. Checked with VISA and I don't have to wait the 6-8 weeks for the repair to be finished. If they repair it, then VISA covers my repair costs and I have two Stiletto's. If BB can't, then VISA covers the full cost of the S2 which I already have.

So it's great that you had such a good experience, but just understand that it was strictly because it was the manufacturer's (Sirius's) policy and nothing to do with Future Shop. If after the 1-year, you need to exercise that extended warranty, expect a very different experience. Seems that both the Sirius warranties and product purchase plans are extremely different in Canada compared to the US. Sirius warranties better up here. PSP's better down there.

That's not what the clerc told me, but after reading your comment, I actually read the small print and you are right! Screwed again...

So, for a future purchase (without VISA, as I don't have one), what would should I do to get the longest replacement warranty after Sirius's first year?

Without the VISA extended warranty, the Future Shop one is your only option. Just be prepared about how it will work. Lots of people on this board have had great/fantastic experiences with their extended warranties and purchase protection plans but those are all US experiences.

The way FS and BB work, there is zero percent chance of them not sending it off for "Repair" and trying to hold onto it for as long as possible in an attempt to get you to replace it yourself in frustration. You eventually will end up with a repaired (maybe a refurb) unit or possibly even a brand new replacement off of the shelf, but it's going to take 2 to 6 months to happen. There's absolutely nothing that could happen to it that they won't send it out for repair at least once.

So in the end you'll get a working replacement, but it's not going to be overnight like your first experience. Just want you to be prepared

Doesn't BB offer the same PSP's in Canada that they do in the US?

The 4 year plan we get (on our S2's) for $40 here - the states, obviously - is fantastic.

No. FutureShop (a subsiduary of Best Buy (they bought them out)) and BB warrentees are identical. They are not the same as the BB warrentee in the states.

Out of curiosity, can a Canadian buy an extended warrentee from BB in the States?

Right now the S2 in Canada is $299 (down from $379 just a month ago). The PSP is $49.99 for 2 years and $59.99 for 3 years. But it's not the price, it's how they take your product away from you for so long in an attempt for them to never have to replace it (they'll do a crap repair instead) and to try to frustrate you into buying a replacement on your own.

There is zero-point-zero (Stern reference there-haha) chance they they will not send it in for repair. Remember if they either at the store, or at the repair out-sourcer think that you've damaged it any way (i.e. damage from drops, water/humidity build-up, opened it up, etc) then that will void the PSP. The PSP will only cover manufacturer's defects.

Below is from the PSP that you can click on from futureshop.ca after choosing the S2 (although I got this specifically for the S2, it's a generic page common to PSP program, not specific items). That's just the way the program works here in Canada. Luckily Sirius Canada is the exact opposite - any problem with the unit at all up to day 355, you just go back to the store and grab a brand new one at no cost. No refurbs from Sirius for us Canucks.

Anyway, here's what the FS site says:

If we can’t fix it, we’ll replace it
You’ll have peace of mind knowing that your product will be replaced if we are unable to repair it, or if the repair will take longer than 60 days.

Don’t get stuck with a lemon
If your product requires more than three major repairs, we’ll provide you with a replacement product.

Wow, do those Canadian warranties SUCK!!

I way prefer walking into my local BB, explaining that my receiver no longer works properly, having my original receipt and PSP verified, and walking out (no questions asked) with a new receiver - either the same as the one I've returned or the latest, greatest one (if out yet).
