Default Life with my Stiletto - My Thoughts

Well after a week of use, I thought it would be nice to document my use so far.

First off, I must say that life with the stiletto at this point would not be typical. It can be frustrating at times due to the lack of the Home and Car dock that are not currently available.

I believe once they are available, things will be less complicated.

As some of you probably know, one of my biggest frustrations has been the lack of a sleep timer. I've posted this on various threads.

http://siriusbackstage.com/forum/sho...694#post628694
http://siriusbackstage.com/forum/sho...676#post626676
http://siriusbackstage.com/forum/sho...166#post624166

I'll start off by telling you about how I finally figured out this Sleep timer issue. I now have a sleep timer.

Here are my sleep timer settings: I choose 2Hr or 4Hr increments. It works rather well. If you want to have different times, it takes a little planning on my part, where I use up some of the power during the day.

Here you can see my Stiletto Bedroom dock layout:

The radio sits on the window sill just to side of my night stand. I utilize the headset antenna that sits on the Garage roof which is outside of my window. You can see it next to my S50 home dock antenna. They both point SW and seem to do OK. You can see two bars on my radio.

The Radio connects to my PC speakers, the same ones I used with my S50. One other thing I must say, I hope the headphones will not rust. Twice this week they got rained on. Otherwise they dry out fine and still continue to work.

Ok, Evenings over and time to get up. Here's something that I could not do before.

Internet Radio. In the morning I like to get 30 minutes on the treadmill. Prior to my stiletto, I used to turn up the volume VERY LOUD from my bedroom so I could listen to Howard while on the treadmill. Now with the stiletto I have a very good excuse to exercise in the morning.

I have two access points in the house RUBIN1 and RUBIN2. RUBIN2 is an old 802.11B Access point that sits in the basement. Here is the stiletto sitting in the water bottle stand. Notice I use my Sony headphones in this mode. They are very comfortable while on the treadmill.

RUBIN1 is my main internet connection. It uses 802.11G and is fast, but this old access point, RUBIN2 was laying around and it is my primary one for the stiletto.

The reason I have access points, is I had a Router about 10 years ago prior to wireless being available. It's configured for DSL and I never wanted to Touch it. At the time, the Access point were on sale and I decided to go that route. Later, when 802.11G came around, I just got another access point and put it up on another level of the house. Both are connected directly to the router.

I tend to walk around the house with my stiletto in this mode. It actually makes it easier to connect to my stereo. in the family room.

In the past, I used to move my Home Dock Antenna down to the family room and connect it to the home dock antenna out the window behind the stereo, The House blocks the signal from that window so I need to use a antenna extension to get the antenna lined up. I usually have the antenna laying on top of a garbage can. Obviously this takes time and not convenient to set up. Now I just plug the AUX connector I have into the ear phone jack and it works like a charm. I listened to Jackie the Joke man’s Joke Hunt last week in this mode. I raced home from work and quickly plugged it in the Stereo. Within a minute I was connected and going. I had a couple of issues with the connection , but I think that was the Sirius stream issue.

The most frustrating part of my day is the drive to work. I've tried it a few times utilizing the technique that many of you do.

Here is what the setup looks like. Normally the radio does not sit up on the dashboard like this, but for the picture I thought it best. I have the antenna headphones around the rear view mirror. I've tried various positions, and I like this one best as you can move it easier from side to side to help with the reception. The earphone connector is connected into a cassette adapter which plugs into my radio. I would of preferred the FM Modulator, but until the car dock comes out this is how I do it.

I hope the signal on the FM Modulator is strong. Now I still use my S50 in the car using the illegal 87.7 frequency.

Currently my S50 is mounted horizontally in my console between the seats. I don't think this will work out well for the Stiletto. In addition, this install has some issues where When I hit a big BUMP, the radio gets loose and disconnects. It looks cool, but is not the best.

I've been looking at the Proclip for the windstar. I think that might look nice. There is room down in the bottom underneath the radio to hide wires and possible use a Female cigarette adapter to connect the power so I can free up the aux power plug.

I also see they make one that goes on my top dash over the vents. This one looks like it might be better for the stiletto. Depending on how it mounts, it might allow it to sit up on the dash supporting it. Well, this is a topic for another post, once we get the car docks.

At work I'm using it with the Universal Dock.

In my posts and usage, I too now know that it is not the answer to the dock issue. It does not fit with the battery and the FM modulator does not work. Also there is no remote which makes it awkward. The only good thing about it is that it connects to my office antenna which is about 60 feet away from my inside office.

Well....

Obviously I've gone on too long here. Most people don't read past a few lines because they think I'm preaching to them and I've reached my 10 picture limit on posting.

I'm really enjoying my Stiletto. I have not figured out any tricks yet. I did find the older firmware file in the Demo Folder and figured out how to install them.

But I think they have done a good job at making this radio solid so we won't need any 3 finger salutes to fix it up.

Well I'm looking forward to the upcoming week's use. Maybe we might find someone who is selling the Car or home docks.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for posting. I'll keep you all updated on my progress of figuring this thing out!

Enjoy,

Mike

Thanks for the review. Hopefully someone at DEI will read this post and get a feel for how frustrating it is without the car/home docks. The lengths we will go to listen to Sirius!!

great post rubin! i use the universal dock in my car (seems to work fine) without putting the battery on the stiletto. this is a pain cause whenever i start my car i have to wait for the stiletto to boot up so i drive in silence for a min or so. but that will all be fixed in the next few weeks when i get the car kit from TSS.

at home, i just use my computer to stream using the yahoo widget. there is no need for the stiletto in my house since i can make the computer speakers loud enough to hear the music anywhere in the house.

i'm considering getting the home kit for xmas so i will be able to love songs though while i am at home. we'll see.

Does the Proclip work out well? I like the location right above my stereo near the vent. Seems like that would keep the unit cooler and provide better access. Right now mine is located on the far right of my stereo which makes it a bit difficult to reach.

I agree great info Mike...

Ironglien what makes you want the Soloist over say the Boombox? Alarm Clock? I think I am leaning towards the Boombox as I like to have the portability of taking this thing like to beach or outtings so that all can enjoy the tunes.

Thus far the Soloist hasn't had much interest for me, but this is why I am curious what yours is?

Put those headphones in a ziplock baggy before you toss it out on the roof

Thanks for all the nice comments. Hopefuly people will use this information and see the enjoyment we all get out of the new radio. I cannot wait to post additional use segments with the various docks. With the stiletto, we have so many more options than with my old S50. So far mine has been working GREAT!

I Like It! Simple idea's are allways the best. I have a gallon, zip lock bag all ready for it's next rainy day. I hope that signal is stong enough to break through that Leak proof seal!

I think those who post here all go to great lengths to listen. Between the past issues with Hardware, and lack of Sirius support we all need to work together and I think we do a great job of it here on the SBS forum.

Jon- Do you have a Universal Car dock? I have the the home dock version. Yes that 45 seconds to 1 minute does seem long when you are waiting.

Dave - I don't have the proclip yet, I am only looking at alternatives for the mounting of my car dock. I'll let you know when I work on this project. If anyone has any good experience with the proclip let me know!

I also have the soloist and the boombox on order from TSS. The soloist for my bedside because of the alarm clock, The boombox for the Deck or just to bring in the van with me for those tailgate parties. I was wondering if the soloist adds any functionality to your settings? Does it allow you to set the alarm? Does it add a sleep timer?

I also hope the Boombox has a remote, nothing tells me it does.

Me Too! Someone said they are available at BB, I still have not found one, but have it on order from TSS.

The pictures are fine in the context of a review. Where I was made this comment you were not doing a review, you were simply making comments and adding huge graphics. Don't piss me off mixing up my words! ROTFLOL
