Default Question about Soloist vs Stiletto Home Dock

I need a dock badly and I've been reading the mostly favorable threads here about the Soloist. There is one factor I need clarification on before I decide to either buy it or wait a couple weeks for the Stiletto's dedicated home dock. I know the Soloist has a headphone jack and that is very important to me. Does the dock have a headphone jack too?

I looked at the TSS website description of the home dock and I do not see a headphone jack listed as a feature. I do see it has fm modulator capability to send the transmission to my stereo amp (btw, does anyone know how close a modulator has to be to the amp to work well? will it go through walls?). I could always have the signal go to the amp and hook up my headphones to it but it would be nice to have a headphone jack on the docking station itself, ala Soloist, and not fool with the amp if I don't want to.

So, in a nut shell, does anyone know for sure if I can hook up my headphones to the Stiletto while it is in the home dock?

I looked in the manual, and it does not show one. You could use a headphone jack from whatever you hook the Line Out to or use the line out itself.

Here's the diagram:

Default Jack

There IS a headphone jack conveniently placed on the front bottom right hand side of the Soloist.

Thanks Rubin, that is the picture I needed. No headphone jack but I hope the line out will serve that purpose. I will have to get an adaptor, however, as the line out plug may be an RCA type connector.

I don't think it's a RCA type or there would be two of therm L & R channel. I think its a stereo plug. Look at the audio cables that are supplied in the manual. Here is the picture. Your headphones will probably just plug right in.

Yep, you're right again. I should have no trouble just plugging the headphones in. However, I have the small plug on my headphones so I may have to have a larger adaptor as I bet those cables are not as small as the plugs on our headphones; we'll see. Anyway, it will work with headphones one way or another.

Yes Charlie, I was aware the Soloist has a headphone jack but it looks like the Stiletto home dock does not. However, it does have audio output that is used to connect to your amp so you can play the thing through speakers. I can use that to plug in my headphones. Even if I need an adaptor of some sort it should work just like a headphone jack, I think.

You can indeed, but you'll need to make sure you have some headphones that have a volume adjustment on them, because the volume output will be too loud to use with just standard headphones without volume control. This was tried on the S50 home dock just as a test and this was the only issue. Even turning the volume down on the S50, which cuts down the volume of the output, it was still much too loud.

I do have headphones with a volume control (Sennheiser rs 140 wireless) so I should not have any trouble with those. I use these when I am working around my property or in the garage. My favorites for sit down listening, however, are Shure E3 earphones which are an in-the-canal type and they do not have a volume control.

If need be, I have a dedicated headphone amp which I sometimes use with my corded Sennheiser HD 500s - a not very efficient pair of cans but sooooo smooth. The device is pluged to the headphone amp and from it there is an output for the phones which controls the volume with a wheel on the amp. It will control the volume to the cans just fine no matter what the output level.

However, it seems to me that I should be able to control the sound level with the volume control on the Stiletto (I hope it is different than the S50 in this regard). If the sound level is fixed out of the dock, I may have to resort to the headphone amp as the only means to control volume levels, but again, that is no problem as it only involves one additonal connection.

All this does not concern me as I will find a fix for volume control. What I was concerned about was the ability to connect my headphones to the Stiletto docking station - one way or another.
