Talking Got a home dock? Want a Soloist equivalent for under $10?

Here's the deal. Buy.com has the Kensington iPod dock for $49.99 (no tax, free shipping). If you use Google Checkout, you get $10 off instantly (valid until the end of October). There is also a $30 rebate with this product. After the Google discount and $30 rebate, your final cost out the door is $9.99. This dock is designed for the iPod, but has a line-in, so you can hook up any audio source. The speaker is identical to the Soloist, the flat design from NXT technologies.

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...7&loc=101&sp=1

Rebate:

http://ak.buy.com/buy_assets/retail/...multikensi.pdf

It's presently on order, and should ship once Buy.com gets more in. No it doesn't have a timer or anything, but the speaker is the same as the Soloist, so if you have a home dock for your Stiletto (or any other means of audio source) you can hook a line out to your Stiletto into this unit.

Instant poor man's Soloist. I already have the Soloist, but just ordered one of these for my office desk.

Credit goes to fatwallet.com for the original deal. Buy.com's inventory was wiped out hours after the deal was posted on fatwallet.

Hope this helps someone!

This doesn't even qualify as a poor mans Soloist. I think most that got the Soloist got it for the small footprint, the fact that docks directly with the Stiletto, thereby allowing scheduled recording and charging, along with listening live. Not to mention using it for the sleep timer, alarm clock and music timer.

Basically this thing is nothing more than the flat panel speakers with an aux-input. Granted its cheap, but in this case, I think you get what you pay for, no offense to you Eric, thanks for the info.

DAB,

While I appreciate your POV, I disagree with you. If you already have the home dock, you have the power, antenna, and remote for the Stiletto. Run a $2 cable from your line out into this speaker (line in) and you have a Soloist minus the clock (timers, etc). It will sound just like the Soloist (exact speaker, just in white).

So what you are basically telling me is the Soloist's clock and timer functions are worth the extra $140? I own one, and on some level, I do agree, but if you already have a home dock for your Stiletto, this is absolutely classified as a "poor man's Soloist."

I firmly stand by my opinion. Pass if you will, but I ordered one for my desk! If nothing else, I'll replay recorded programs on it and they will sound just as good as my $150 Soloist on my nightstand. Besides, the only difference b/t this unit and the Soloist is the clock (again, I am addressing those who already have the home dock or plan on listening to recorded programming).

I've stated my case. IMO, it's not really worth arguing about for ten bucks. If you don't see it is a value, then so be it!

Disclaimer: In no way am I suggesting this is a replacement for the Soloist. If you have a need for the clock functions, and don't already have a home dock (read: remote and antenna), then spring for the Soloist! I love mine but didn't want to spend another $150 on another one, so I got this $10 NXT flat panel speaker for my office.

I am really okay with you not agreeing with me. If all I wanted was a speaker system with an aux-input there are many other options available that will sound a heck of a lot better than a flat panel speaker system.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your info, it is certainly worth someone taking a look at, if they are looking for a speaker system with a small footprint and aren't interesting in the features that the Sololist add to the mix. For me those features were the whole reason I got the Soloist and while I agree the price is steep for those features, there is no other way to get them period.

Let us know how it turns out for you.

Gotchya DAB. I guess my main point here is the speaker that is in the Soloist (the one everyone including me RAVES about) is the same one that is in this unit. The rich sound of the NXT honeycomb speaker in the Soloist is the main reason people seem to be giving it such positive reviews (myself included). So b/c it's the exact speaker, I figured people may want to take advantage of this deal. My Soloist SQ is outstanding, and I look forward to enjoying the same sound quality on this secondary unit for my home dock!

Sure there are endless aux-in speaker setups out there, but to have the NXT flat speaker for this price is outstanding!

I agree given that scenario and the price for this unit is hard to beat. I agree with you on the SQ and for the small footprint, its incredible. Having options and choices is great. So again, thanks for the info.

Perhaps an it's an alternative, but not the "equivalent."

This is one of the few things that I disagree with you on DAB. I thought that the sound was just so so, plugging my soloist into some cheap 20 dollar computer speakers sounded better than the soloist speakers. Plus the alarm clock and sleep timers are worthless to me since I had the soloist at work. Oh well, I returned mine so I'm not complaining...just did not see the value given my perception of the quality of the unit. Now I'll wait for my home dock...\

There is little doubt that are other speaker alternatives that sound better, but lets not sell the Soloist short. For the small footprint and the flat panel speaker system, the sound is incredible compared to what my expectations were. Perhaps you just had much higher expectations in regards to sound. I find the sound clear, crisp and the bass just blew me away much better than I ever expected. I bought mine to use in my bedroom, not to take to the office. I see this more of a bed stand type setup than one to be used at the office. But because you opted to use yours at the office, does not negate the fact that it does indeed offer the sleep mode, alarm clock and music mode features. Overall the ability to go to sleep at night with some music and then wake up to music, along with the fact that it charges it. This allows me to just yank it off the base in the morning, always knowing I got a full charged battery. Plus if in the interim during the night I used the music mode to have it do some recording, it will do that without me ever hearing a sound out of it, so this provides me fresh and new content each day to take with me.

It sounds to me like you just never realized or used the full potential of this Soloist because you opted to use it at work, which in my opinion is not where this was designed to be used. There are many other alternatives a lot better in the work environment than the Soloist in my opinion. One as you pointed out would be just a good computer speaker system. I don't use that, but since I am on the road so much, I do have the JBL On Tour Speaker system and that little baby packs a wallop in sound and works fantastic with my Stiletto. The rechargeable batteries on it will last me a full week of listening as I am in and out of various offices each week and the footprint is about half the size of the Soloist.

That's funny, the JBL On Stage is what I use at home for my ipod and stiletto and it works great! I would expect something that costs almost twice as much to sound pretty close. I used the soloist for 3 days, 8 to 10 hours a day, so saying I didn't use it enough or whatever is kind of false. I also think it's really inaccurate to say that an office isn't an appropriate use for it when it says right on the box it's perfect for home or office use. The remote was a piece of junk, the buttons are way too small and were difficult to push sometimes (kind of felt like they stuck), and the sound was not very clear to me...

How on earth do you think that it is not an appropriate use in an office...I don't think having a nice looking setup rather than a home dock and computer speakers...and I did not say good computer system, but rather a cheap pair of speakers I bought 5 years ago from Best Buy.

Hopefully our opposing view points help point out the good and the bad of the soloist; i still think it's a great idea, just was not very impressed. I know I'll be happy getting another JBL On Stage and hooking it up to my homedock, and it'll end up being roughly the same price as the soloist. Oh well, DAB I hope we can agree to disagree on this one!
