Default Cell Phone Makers Seem To Be Pushing Hard

To get Satelite radio over the cell phones. Sprint, Alltel and now Cingular offer this service. It seems, many people are always looking to cut down on the total number of devices they are carrying around. Its great that there is other venues to get Sat. radio but one has to wonder how this will impact portable device sales from Sirius and XM.

IF one of the sat services were to get in bed with a cell phone provider, just think about how crazy good the reception would be! If the cell phone satellites and repeaters were capable of transmitting sat radio signal, we would almost never hear of people complaining about signal loss. If their existing systems couldn't support sat radio, at least there would be the benefit of having a partner that would have the experience and resources to improve the satellite system for music that exists now.

Post not their yet

I have Sirius on my sprint phone and it streams well except it only has a few channels and they are all music. The major downside is that on my phone you cannot make or get an outgoing/incomming call when listening. It's not any competition to my Stilleto in my opinion. I'm all for the melding of the two worlds it's just that I'm not willing to compromise anything for my Satellite radio. I need all the channels and options etc.

What is a downside for you (not able to use the phone while listening to music) is an upside for sirius. When people realize that sirius is better, they will dump the sirius on phone service and get a real plan. Kinda like that free internet trial they had/have.

This "limitation" will be overcome in some of the newer cell phones. I've read a couple articles about how they would like the cell phone and data feed to work simultaneously. From a cell phone carrier perspective this opens new ideas with live video chats and other cool interactive features.

I for one would never move to listening via cell phone if they don't have all the recording capabilities that I have enjoyed on the S50 and Stiletto. I consider these features a must have for really enjoying the service. Sirius entertains me for many many hours each day because of these advanced Tivo-like features.

As with any technology it's just a matter of time before things converge into a single device. It's up to the marketing engine to spin these things into into a profitable position for the company yet convenient for the customer.

I guess I was looking at it from the angle of still being able to use a dedicated receiver that connects to the cell phone companies infrastructure. Similar to the way that we connect out laptops and PDA's via the cell system. Eventually phones will have it all, but the next step as I see it (for higher fidelity and full function) is to get the satellite radios on the cell networks.

If they replaced the wifi in the next Stiletto with a cell phone connection where I could use my existing carrier and account they'd have me sold! Today I was at Cobo Hall in Detroit and couldn't get a terrestrial signal nor the free wifi to work. However, I could call out on my cell phone!!

Made me remember this conversation....
