Default Stiletto Review

Well, I got an email from Sirius.com asking if I wanted to cancel my belated order. I did, went to Best Buy, and now am the proud owner of a Stiletto! Here are my personal observations after the 1st 48 hours:

1. I am testing the unit in south-central Alabama between Montgomery and and Birmingham. There are no repeaters nearby. The verdict so far for me on reception is "decent." The unit gets good reception with the headphones outdoors and even indoors (*GASP*). I was surprised to learn I can sit on my living room sofa and get an acceptable sat signal (that's probably dependent on time of day, but it has held up 100% of the times I've tried). The unit antenna has been worthless for me, even under a clear sky.

2. The batteries rate "very good" for me. So far, they have matched the rated duration in the manual. I turned down the backlight to 65% and turn off the system sounds (including the cool-for-the first-five-minutes voice announcement of the station you're dialing up).

3. The headphones are evidently better for me than other folks. I went for a long walk in the park today during NFL games. The headphones were comfortable enough, gave good reception (even under some trees), and stayed on my head while playing catch with my daughter. I agree these are not the coolest fashion accessory in town. If you're worried, wear a ballcap you wont look like a space cadet or anything. At least for ME, I didn't get any "Come in, Major Tom, this is mission control" looks from folks. Your mileage may vary.

4. The software. Ahem. Yeah, well, I've yet to get it to work. I spent about 3 hours working on it last night... uninstall, reinstall driver, update to WMP 11, try different computers. For me, it has been the worst part of the experience thus far. I've kinda given up, at least for now. I tried to get it working before the review, but after the 13th crash and reboot, well....

5. The earbuds to me are decent, but not $370 device decent. That fact coupled with no belt clip, arm band, dock of any kind, or even a cheap vinyl sleeve makes the value sketchy. To make matters worse, because of how the ports line up on bottom, you can't have the headphones AND the power adapter plugged in at the same time. Desole?! No es triste?! Es tut mir leid?! That means to keep it powered and listen to it at home you have to have the dock. To me, that little gotcha rates the accessory value at RIP-OFF status. [I devised a work-around until my home dock gets here by mod-ing a MyFi dock. I cut off the plastic prongs on the dock so I can plug in and connect an antenna. I can't listen to it this way, mind you, (the audio out doesn't work on the dock and the headphone jack on the Stiletto is obscured by the dock) but I am able to record this way and listen later.] Bottom line: they have designed this device so it is EITHER a walkman, or you have to buy a dock for $69. You can either plug it in to charge, or listen to it, not both (unless you have a repeater in your kitchen, of course). Just my opinion, but that's criminally insane and worthy of flogging. Sirius, you may beat your noggin repeatedly until forgiven.

Overall, I love the iPod-ness of the device, the portability, and the features. I condemn the software and port design as an unholy anathema. The former is quite nice, the latter is, well, just wrong. It is nice to be able to run or go for a walk and listen to Sirius, but the value is poor to me based on price, design, and accessories (or lack thereof). If this came with a dock, it'd be worth the $370.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not taking it back... I love it for what it does. BUT: I firmly believe the people gots to get what they want. Sirius needs to give people more for that kind of money.

OVERALL: Good first product, suitable performance, room for software improvement, mixed with just a touch of accessory crimes against humanity. For that last portion,

"I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Hey Ace, well they finally decided to let you cancel the order afterall. Glad that worked out for you.

Thanks for the real-time review. I think what you'll find is after you use it for while you like it more and more. That seems to be the general consensus of most of us. Good and fair review!

Thanks much! I definitely like it, and as you say, I will probably like it even more once the dock, cover, and arm band get here!

When, oh when will they arrive!?!?

Ace--Thanks for taking the time for a detailed review. Why not give your thoughts after a month of use.

Will do!

I also finally got the software to recognize it... don't know what did it other than install/uninstall repetition... MP3s sound great!

Do I dare use Yahoo Music?
