The relay is powered. The FM out from the dock has 5v on it, which causes the relay to "disconnect" the car antenna from the radio and "connect" the car dock when the dock is powered. I don't have one (I built a homemade version a couple years ago when the relays were impossible to find), but I think with the unit off, you should see no difference in reception.

Sirius was in such a big rush to get these units out on the market that once again they dropped the ball. I mean how many people are going to pay 379 for the unit plus 69 for the car dock and another 60 for the install of the FM mod...thats right me! but i'll tell you this most people arent going to drop 500 for a sirius radio that works in 1 car...to buy multiple car docks means more FM mods in my other cars...BARF! Sirius put up no fight when it came to what the FCC wanted...but once again they can do it however they want to but if they dont start getting solid hardware, it will never last. just no way people will pay that much money for nonsense, and thats what the car dock is...1 month of waiting for nonsense.

How would sirius fight the fcc?

fcc has laws and sirius has to obey them or face legal actions.

fcc says no brodcasting on 87.7 and 87.9.
so sirius had to take them off the newer radios.

fcc says you cant have a STRONG fm broadcaster in your radio.
so sirius like xm had to weaken the fm power.

so you have a few options.
1) cancel your sirius account.
2) get you radio hardwired
3) write the FCC and let them know how you feel about this
4) quit your bitchin because the fm power wont increase.

i would suggest #2 and #4
#3 wont get you anywhere
#1 would be good for ignorant people that want to blame sirius for something that they have no control over.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

i hope you can now understand that your problem isint with sirius and there hardware.

but your problem is with the fcc.

so quit raggin on sirius because you are starting to sound foolish.
but now that you are informed i dont think we will hear anymore about this.

Well Mr. Cleveland, all i can say is that most people fall into 2 groups. those who listen and those who speak. A lot of things would be different if everytime someone said something everyone listened and didnt ask questions.

My point is simple, Sirius dropped the ball. I'm sure they had it figured out to the day how much money they lose with having units in the warehouse as opposed to having them on retail shelves.

The FCC can do what they wish, but asking questions and trying to get the best product out to the customers isnt too much to ask.

2 questions I would ask right off the bat are.

1. why were we able to in the past broadcast on stations 87.7 and 87.9 and not anymore, what has changed?

2. Why were we able to broadcast at a higher power in the past, and not anymore? what has changed?

I have spent over $500 dollars already for the sirius unit, cardock, and FM modulator. I would find it hard to believe that anyone could do it for much less. And I mean much less as in more then 50 dollars less.

Lets face it the unit is self is great, but the reception is ok overall on average. tack on another 120+ to listen to it in the car and you have yourself a pretty expensive item.

Sirius's equipment is getting worse not better. and in a electronic world that we live in, thats bad news for the company who is making it.

I'm curious about the free FM Mod kit you got at Best Buy. I found a car kit at my local BB with a sticker on the front that said "for a limited time" I would get a $20.00 FM Mod with this purchase, and to "see my dealer" for info. No one at BB could tell me how to get the mod, just that I would probably have to call Sirius to get it. Did BB give it to you???
