Thumbs down Car Dock Sucks In Chicago!

Well after waiting weeks for car dock to come out, after buying the S100 hours after it arrived at the store I am now going to try and become a professional car radio installer.

I drove around the chicagoland area for at least an hour trying to get a FM station that I could get a clear signal with...Nothing! What sucks even worse is that in the past the 87.7 and 87.9 stations have always been my best bet for FM stations, but the Stiletto car dock only lets you search FM stations starting at 88.1 AWESOME IDEA SIRIUS!

The Vehicle I drive the most is my company van, a 2006 Checy Uplander, my own personal car still has a tape deck so I can deal with that when driving my own car.

So lets go down the check list.

1st I look for an AUX input so i can just direct connect and forget the FM thing all together...Nope don't have one on the front anywhere...Strike 1

2nd I look to see if I have a tape deck so i can just pretend that its the early 90's and i cant afford a CD player in my car so I use a portable CD player with 20 second anti-shock skip protection to listen to my CD's...Ohh thats right they stopped having tape decks in cars sometime around the year 2000...Strike 2

So now tomorrow I need to try and figure out if I can find where the antenna wire goes into my radio, and try and figure out how to install this FM mod so i can listen to sirius radio.

I just want to remind myself and others that as a Sirius subscriber I pay the regular monthly fee's plus a 369 dollar unit, plus a 69 dollar car, plus a 20 FM mod, plus my time to figure out how to make all this work.

Seriously If i didnt make decent money I return this whole deal, and just keep my Sportster replay where the light only works for about 10 seconds after i tap my finger on the unit for 30 seconds. I certainly hope Sirius understands that content will only get you in the race, you need affordable, and dependable hardware to win.

Just remember most of those perfessional radio installers don't have anything you don't have except a a few special tools and the knowledge of what to do.

Use the internet, this forum, and your common sense to get the direct adapter installed. You might have to invest a few dollars buying a tool or to, but in the end it should work out.

Get an idea of what you are up against by going to BB or some other place and ask for an estimate to install the Modulator relay in your car. When you do ask questions, lots of questions.

Where do you put it?
Are there any special adapters necessary?
How long will it take?
What exactly are you going to remove?
You might even talk to the kid who does it and later go over to him and ask him if you could give him 20 bucks to install it as a side job.

In my case installing the FM Direct Adapter was the easiest part.

The worst case, is you get someone to install it for you, I bet you can have it done for $100 bucks. It may seem like a lot, but actually it's a cheap date when you really think about it. And in the end she won't give you any static!

Actually, Best Buy will install it for $13-30 depending on the complexity of installing it.

Default car dock

I just installed my car dock... and it is working GREAT!
Some things I have to say.
I installed the FM relay, and it sounds great...BUT
when the stiletto is in the dock with the relay, you
can't listen to am stations. try to get the fm relay
that you can shut off the relay. I think CC sells one.

Have you tried to power down the Stiletto while it's in the dock to see if the AM/FM stations will come in again? I'm not 100% sure, but I'm guessing that the wired FM relay is automatically powered on and off based upon whether or not your Sirius tuner is trying to pull in a signal. As long as the Sirius tuner is on, I'm guessing that the FM wired relay will stay on regardless of whether or not you're actually listening to Sirius.

I always thought that the relay was not powered at all, it just sends the signal right into the antenna on your car radio from the car dock. If this is the case, then yes, the stiletto/car dock will be sending out a signal as long as it's on.

Ok heres the deal.. I like listening to local traffic reports, say 1010 on the 10, and I'm listening to Howard. I don't want to power off the stiletto, it will take 3 minutes to get Howard back.
This is what I did
First I wired in a always on 12v for the power for the stiletto, plus with the battery in, now while I'm listening to Howard, I lift the stiletto up in the car dock. Howard is still on, but the dock turns off and the AM station comes in clear.

As long as the stiletto is on in the dock, the relay is on.

There was some website posted a while back that told you what the best FM station was to use in your area. I cannot remember the web site though. I used it and it told me to use 97.7, and I haven't had bad luck with it since. (Knock on wood)

First, let me say I am a big fan Mr. Lennon.

Second, check tss-radio and see if an auxilary adaptor is available for your car, and then you can still get top notch sound. You shouldn't be fucking with any other options, if you don't have to.

I got a free FM Mod the sirius version from best buy when i bought my car kit. The only problem's i am going to have is removing the radio which I dont know how to do, and also getting the right plugs to work. The best buy guy told me that I need special plugs because I drive a 2006 Chevy uplander, and they have different plugs then the regular ones.

So far Best buy told me they could do it for 100 dollars...CC for 60. I would really like to do it for less but my radio is stock, and i have never removed a radio before...the current static is driving me nuts!!!!!

do some research before you say AWESOME IDEA SIRIUS!

it wasnt upto sirius to leave in the 87.7 and 87.9

what did you want them to do?
leave it in so they can get the radio taken off the market?

yeah while there at it they can turn up the fm power and put on 87.7 and 87.9 so we can get the whole company shutdown by the fcc.

but its all good for you in chicago RIGHT?

either hardwire the radio or put the fm mod in the car.

Can't you set the car dock to what ever radio station works the best for you, clearest. if the station is 93.4, aren't you able to set the car dock to 93.4 too? I thought I read that.

I understand jlennon's problem the thing is that if you live in chicago it is pretty much slim pickin's when it comes to fm stations because the college's and universities take over all the lower numbered stations. The rest are filled with fm stations that send out to large of a signal for weak fm transmitters (car dock) to overpower the best recommendation is to try and get a relay or an aux input i opted for the aux input good luck.
