Default $20 alternative to soloist

I'm looking for a replacement for my soloist. It basically works well, but I hate the remote and hate the clock. It's very difficult to read. It's programming is difficult because you have to program the soloist and the Stiletto.

Yesterday, while in target, I saw some of the Timex clock radios. They start at 19.99 and go up to about 60 bucks depending on Stereo, CD and other options.

These new breed of clock radio's have a MP3 wire which allows an aux input. With the clock radio this gives you sleep timer features and alarm features and at the same time the buttons are bigger and the clock is easy to read.

I'm thinking that I could use the line out of the home dock to plug into this. The home kit has a very nice remote.

I would of invested the 20 bucks yesterday, but it is missing one thing. Headphone jack.

Has anyone seen a clock radio with a mp3 input that has a headphone jack? I think that would be perfect combination with the home dock to replace my soloist.

I may of found one. This is a GE Stereo clock radio that says it has headphone jack in addition to aux input. It even has a phone too. Caller ID is on the display.

It's less than 50 bucks at amazon.

This one is available at BB so I think I'll return the soloist, while it's still less than 30 days and give this one a try.

Read the product specs (the Timex clock in the 1st post). It CAN NOT wake to the aux port. Music (AM/FM) or buzzer only.

I wanted this same model in lieu of the Soloist, but after researching, the Soloist appears to be the only alarm clock that allows waking to an aux in music source.

I ended up keeping my Soloist and got this for the kitchen. Paid $9.99 after rebate from Buy.com. It uses the same speaker as the soloist.

It specifically says you can "Wake up to your favorite Tunes" I believe you are not correct on this one.

Hmm, maybe you are right. I swear it doesn't specify on the box. I looked at this model along with many others, and none of them had the ability to wake to aux-in.

I'm probably wrong...

My bad.

Actually at Target, I opened up the box and read the instructions. They specifically tell you to move the selector back to AM/FM if you want to wake up to the radio.

I just wish the Stiletto had a built in sleep mode, I could live without the alarm, but it would have been nice to include these in the tuner itself. Then I would have just continued using my old Cambridge XM Playdock, hooked up to a home dock.

I returned my Soloist and got the iHome clock radio and a home dock. It's for the iPod but it has AUX IN. The one feature I like is that the sleep volume does not affect the alarm volume.

OK last night I returned my soloist. Best Buy is the greatest for returning things. I had had the soloist 29 days had the receipt and all the packaging. I put it together took it to the counter Two barcode scans later it was returned. Gota Love it!

Anyway they also had the GE phone. It was 50 dollars a little more than CC but I was there so I bought it.

OK It's not perfect. It does not wake to Aux Input. The Sleep Timer works for Aux Input. The phone is kind of neat. It has a feature that if you are talking/answering on the phone the radio go off. I don't like this feature. But I guess some would. I still have not figured out the one issue in that once the sleep timer goes off and the radio shuts down. I turn back on the radio and the radio turns off 1 minute later. I tried it several times and it seems that it still thinks the sleep timer is set. I can go ahead and press the sleep timer again for say 2hrs and then it stays on, but once the sleep timer goes to zero everytime I turn it back on one minute later it's shut down again.

The best thing about the clock radio is the display. BIG digits easy to read. 3 adjustable brightness settings with the dimmest being just barely bright enough to see unless the room is completely dark. The buttons don't light up so it makes it hard to find in the dark. But the radio on button is a big bar along the bottom and the snooze button is a big bar along the top so either one is easy to hit in the dark. The caller id is nice in that it is very easy to read when someone calls. This would be nice, but my phones already talk outloud who's calling so that already solved that issue for me.

Well I'm going to call the GE answer man today to see if they can solve the issue about the radio going off after 1 minute after the sleep timer expires. The wake up issue is not that bad for me in that my stiletto is recording Stern, so I can back-up to 6am. But the 1 minute is a deal breaker.

I might go back and look at the timex radios. They had one with a CD player that had stereo speakers. I wonder how hard it is to put a headphone jack in it. I might be able to wire one.

Well let me live with this one a few weeks and see what happens. Meanwhile I need to find another Home Dock. BB did have stiletto's and Car docks when I was there last night. They said next week they are getting a shipment of home docks.

My prediction: you will end up with the Soloist again after it's all said and done.

If the Soloist was $50, would you stick with it? I do agree $150 is way steep for the thing.

DAB:

The speakers sound great, but not quite as good as the Soloist. The midrange and highs are the same, but the Kensington dock/speaker lacks the Soloist's bass. I think the difference is because the Soloist has the EQ and the Kensington does not.

Nonetheless, it's perfect for listening to WiFi/Recorded programs in my Kitchen. I may even get a home dock to get live tunes...

One thing I wish it had was a physicial on/off switch (it has a toggle button). This would allow me to use it just like a Soloist. Plug it into a timer (at the outlet) and set it to switch on in the morning. This would power up the speaker (Stiletto would have to be on all night) and act as an "alarm." Unfortunately, this will not work because when you plug the speaker in, the power is off by default. If only it had a physical switch...

Still, I'm not complaining b/c it was only $10.

ericshmerick, thanks for the info on the Kensington.

I am without a doubt keeping my Soloist! Today is by 29th day and this baby isn't going anywhere. I agree the unit is pricy and I think they would sell more of them if it had a pricing point of $99, instead of the $149.99. Seems to be a high margin item. There just isn't going to be anything out there that works as well for the sleep mode and alarm clock on the Soloist and to go through all the frustration to save a few bucks certainly isn't worth it to me.

No, the worst case is I go back to my S50 and the computer speakers. That had everything I needed. I use to just look at that little clock in the left corner. I never had to set it and it worked great as a alarm with my daily reocrding setup for Howard. As long as I can keep it working...

So let me get this straight. Because the Soloist didn't fit your needs you are kicking around the idea of returning to your S50? Wow man, you're all over the place!!

Back to the S.Carolina/Florida game. Damnit I hope SC wins!!!

EDIT: Blocked FG attempt. Man, what a frustrating end. Being a Gamecock fan is hard work.

I am thinking Mike means just in his bedroom. The S50 did have a sleep timer which makes it nice. But I've since sold all my S50 stuff. I have nothing except the little cloth sack to remind me of my S50.

The real deal is as I said, they should have included the clock on the display with the sleep mode and alarm feature all built into the tuner itself.

No I said in the Worst Case. I would love them to add the clock on the main display and add sleep mode and alarm features.

But Actually, I got my second Home Dock today at BB. I plan to use the FM modulator now to the clock radio. This allows me to awake with Howard.

And yes it is only for my bedroom. My car, office, and stereo all now support my stiletto.

Once I get everything converted the S50 is supposed to go to my son. If he does not install it soon, I may just save 7 bucks a month and disconnect it. Although, lately I've just left it connected to my computer and let it record off of it.

Finally I guess I am all over the place but Having fun trying to figure all these combinations out.
