Default "Trying out" SL10

I found an SL10 tonight at Wal-Mart , and figured I'd give it a shot and see if I really want one of these for Christmas. I will give some quick first thoughts. Oh and let me say please refrain from making me feel like I am the uncool kid on welfare. I do not have a need for the WI-FI part I prefer more of the talk shows than music quite often. Nor do I wish to record 100 freaking hours of radio or mp3's. Even the 10hrs of this is high for me.

Very neat gadget. But unfortunately I cannot really test it out w/o activating it. I mean I can get the test channel but that is all. I cannot add mp3's to see how that works, cannot get into any other menus or settings, can't recor to see how that is, absolutely nothing. I was planning on just walking around the yard and such tomorrow with 184 just to check reception for my use. But evidently I should just activate it even if it is just for a couple days. So that is a big bummer.
Yes, those headphones are just downright ignorant. I assumed in hearing the complaints that the ant portion was big heavy and uncomfortable. But no, it's the most important part, the actual earphones that jab into your head like a crusifiction of the ears. What a dumb and uncomfortable design.
Oh and the inability to charge with AC and have the ant headphones on is another dumb move. With the headphones on I can get a little bit of a signal indoors. I am near Indy but am out of range of repeaters. Just alot of windows and skylights. I only walked outside briefly, but in that brief time I had several dropouts and have yet to be thrilled. We shall see tomorrow while I am hanging up the lights outside.
Did notice though when connected via USB that it gives me a different interface of connecting to Sirius online. Also the NFL and a few of the political channels were also available. I do not have the premium online, so I was puzzled by this.
No FM transmitter really stinks too. they force you to get the car or home docks. I know a mini to rca cable adapter would work, but transmitter would be usefull. Though it looks as though signal will be an issue.

Also just thought it would be nice to be able to connect a standard antenna to it. Then with just the mini-to-rca or even a casette adapter you could hook it up in a car. Damn they got us with that funky jack. I assume putting headphone antennas on dash may work though would slide alot and not as strong as reg antenna.

GB33 you are making many of the exact same points that were made about the S100. Other than the smaller memory, no ability to love songs and no wifi, they are actually exactly the same.

Yeah I realize that I am kind of repeating everything that was said about the 100. But I saw next to nothing out there about the 10. What is it you mean about loving a song? It has a love thing on the screen and where you can pick an artist and song for searching. My knowledge on it is still limited as I haven't activated it yet.
But I gotta say though, this thing is still pretty darn sweet. I will see how it does outside this afternoon while putting up Christmas lights. Can't believe though they don't at least give you some generic type of armband or case. Affraid to stick it in my pocket for fear of damaging it. May use my small digital camera case just for today while outside.

Have fun listening to The weather channel (184) while hanging Xmas lights. Sounds like a firecracker of an afternoon.

Talk about a cautious purchaser. Can you imagine the planning that goes on when this guy needs a new car? Jesus.

LOVING a song is having the ability to record individual songs as they are playing. The S10 does not have this feature where as the S100 does. The S10 does have the artist/song seek feature, whereas the S100 does not.

You aren't ever really going to enjoy or know this product if you don't activate it.

I went ahead and activated it there sparky. But thanks. I am so freaking cautios and research happy that it annoys the hell out of my wife. And myself at times too. But I am not a big fan of wasting money on frivolous things. Especially ones that do not work the way I want them too. but that was funny.

Does the 10 not allow you to tranfer MP3 files to it or am I missing something? Cannot find it in software. Which is different than what comes with SL100. It is also not mentioned at all in the instructions. If this does not act as an MP3 player, then my wife will be turned off from it thats for sure.
It does let me drag and drop them into the software, but nowehere does it show to tranfer to player. The SL100 software does, but does not allow the SL10 to be used with it. Hopefully this is an oversight.

Glad that you're research happy... much better to be that than to be one of the people that spend $400 on a device that isn't even close to what they thought it would be.

Like I said I did activate it, but am very concerned with the sat signal. it stinks out in my completely wide open yard on a perfectly clear day and no leaves on the trees. Terestrial seems to actually go down when I put headphone ant on. Do you guys think they will release headphones in the future that are a bit more sensitive? And comfortable obviously.
I am VERY skeptical about this in a car w/o docking kit and r/t antenna. A regular antenna line with the square plastic clip removed (old type) comes SO close to fitting in the antenna slot, but just wont. kind of like charging and listening with ant headphones. It is just so close, but not happenin.
I am (obviously) skeptical and cautious. But man this thing is cool. Especially since I was with the original units that had the dual feed antenna wire and adapter with bulky seperate tuner that had to be hard wired to DC source and had a fan cooling it off.

Thanks. yeah I am quite the annoyingly opposite. Every time I get something, after researching forever, it is time to move on to researching something else. be it for me or a friend or family member. I'm just dorky like that and love information. Now if only I was rich I would have it made.

I will DEFINATELY say the signal meters are very misleading. With one bar at bottom I usually don't get any sound. And ocasionally with 2 it is spotty.
In the more detailed signal bar screen it is even worse. I could have nearly half on both and still get nothing. Although at times at about 1/4 of a bar it is fine. VERY sketchy.

Whoa, a big oversight on my part. Wife will not like the no mp3 playback feature. Man is that dumb. I dont care about the wifi (though with this spotty reception and NFL and Patriot now online maybe I will re-think), or the 10hrs of recording. But no mp3 playback?! Why?!
Perhaps a software upgrade down the road, or maybe even a hack perhaps! Just told wifey and she is bummed. But understands I could record some stuff overnight. Assuming I get a signal that is. $350 is just steep! Maybe I should be one that waits for round 3 of Sirius' handhelds. Damn-it!
If they would sell those in house repeaters like XM has, that would be nice.

I will reply to myself again. So I hung up the lights this afternoon and got in a good couple hours with the SL10. Quite a mixed bag still. But first and foremost, Sirius has got to be sending replacement headphones out right? Those are just a joke or a mishap I am hoping. Those should be given to Iraqi prisoners as torture. I have NEVER had headphones, or anything for that matter, be so uncomfortable. Not to mention the signal was still VERY spotty in my wide open yard. How the hell is this? Is the antenna in there upside down or what?! I HAD to wear different headphones to listen with and have those on my head as well. Many times the hard cheap plastic pieces of **** would slide off my head. Really capping off the fun I was already having with untangling lights and extension cords.
But the interface, and useage of the unit is pretty sweet. Still just baffled about the SL10 not playing mp3 files. They do want to sell these things right? Then why do that, not supply any type of holster or arm band, give you the most painful non operating headphones, and FORCE you to spend more money on kits and accessories.
