Default Speck Stiletto Tough Skin Case

I just got my Stiletto this last weekend and ordered one of these. Can you dock the Stiletto in the home and car dock without removing the case like you could with the s50? Any info would be very much appreciated.

The docks are too tight for you to do this.

Also, the unit would get too hot.

Let us know how you like it. I saw one at Radio Shack today for $25. A bit steep I feel, but I like the rugged look and feel of it. Though as with cell phone holsters, I am not a fan of swiveling belt clips. Curious to see if it affects the reception due to ant covered.

We've already had a few people review them and the reception does not appear to be impacted with the antenna covered.

Both your comments are not true.

You can perform minor surgery on the Speck case and it will fit just fine in both the car and home dock. So far I haven't noticed the device getting any warmer than usual. I haven't taken the Stiletto out of the case in several weeks now yet it's been in-and-out of the docks many many times.

Here are some pics...

Actually dave I think both his comments are true, not everyone wants to buy one of these things and then have to start cutting it up to make it fit/work. So does it work without cutting it up, the answer is clearly no. I appreciate your eagerness to share you method of making this case work and they can certainly consider that as an option.

The leather cases from Directed Electronics give a warning about the potential to overheat and my experience having used the Speck Rubber case on my S50 clearly showed me how it tends to hold in heat. It just isn't recommend while charging and listening live that you have this device in a case... ANY case! Perhaps that was Directed Electronics just being over cautious, but I think it is a warning worth considering.

I was able to measure temps with and without the cases on during normal operation with the Stiletto in Sat Mode. Without the case around 55c/131f and with the case around 65c/149f. This was on a fall day... imagine now during the summer driving around with this rubber case on your Stiletto with the sun maybe shining on it and I think you get my point.

It is my opinion and my opinion only... that these cases are really designed to take these devices and use them on the go as portables, but not while docked.

It is a tight squeeze to get the Tough Skin on and off, but the result is that for the first time my SL100 actually looks good. No busy front panel, no peculiar white shell, a much more refined antenna bulge. The Tough Skin seems part of the radio, not just a case.

The Directed leather case is OK when closed, but when you flip up the front, there's the ugly SL100 again. And the Tough Skin feels much better in the hand. It tapers better than the leather case, and of course, it is extremely slip resistant.

Also, you can completely remove the fastener for the belt clip, which is nice, because the SL100 is too big to hang on a belt (unless you want to look like a complete idiot who's still carrying a 1980's cell phone).

So three cheers for the Tough Skin!

The good news is that we do have a choice... I do like the overall look of the Tough Skin and the protection it offers, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I don't think the Stiletto looks bad without a case.

HEAT and inconvenience in removing it is just not acceptable and I feel folks need to think about that in making a decision about what case to get.

I guess I stand corrected in your case. I was merely stating, keeping in mind the facts DAB gave. I'm glad that it's worked out for you.

In all fairness it's nearing winter and I am in Michigan. 61 for a high today which is good considering it's late November! I'll take DAB's comments as warning when spring gets here. In the meantime I will enjoy the case.

The fact is I like the Speck case but I would prefer something better. At the moment I consider it the best option out there(after I cut it up). I hope to see better cases when spring approaches. Perhaps I will reserve the Speck rubber case for fall/winter use and something else in the spring/summer.

BTW, I believe my comments are correct "after cutting it up" and "in the fall/winter". I guess I didn't fully qualified my comment.

I remember those days. I bet it will be 20 and snow tomorrow.

Why would anyone want a case around the Stiletto in a dock? Seems to me the case is meant for travel and protection. I can't see any need for protection when it is in a dock.

I agree with you, but I think dave's issue is he doesn't like removing it from the case when docking. It takes me about 2 seconds to remove mine from my leather flap case, so it is no issue for me. Today here in Louisiana 70 degrees with my Stiletto in the car dock, sun shining on it on and off. I was feeling it to see how warm it got and I have to tell you it heated up pretty good. No way I'll have mine in ANY case while docked no matter what time of the year.

I don't "want" the unit in the case while in the dock. The only reason my Stiletto is in the case while docked is because it's such a pain in the ars to take it in-and-out all the time.

The Speck Rugged case is 2 pieces. One is the case itself and the other is the plastic screen protector. Fitting the tight case along with slipping in the screen protector is far too much work to do all the time. Not to mention the screen protector is a small piece of clear plastic that will have your finger prints all over it if inserted without care.

Someone would have a sale if they would devise a case where you can use it as a portable, has a decent screen protector, and can easily be taken out for docking. So far I haven't seen anything that fits my criteria as a good case. In the meantime we make due with what we have. BTW, I'm not a big velcro fan so that must also not be part of the case(unless is something seldom used). There is a nice leather case with velcro at the bottom that seems good but turns me off at the same time. I thought I saw one with magnetic closure that might not be too bad. Time will tell...

I did not know it was such a pain to take the case on and off. I agree then, there has to be a better design.
