Default Cannot Connect via WiFi

Hey guys,

My Stiletto won't recognize my wireless router. It doesn't even appear on the list of available networks.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your router needs to be broadcasting the SSID in wireless b (I think).

I suggest you either reconfigure or reset your router. The SSID must be broadcasting. It will only work on a b/g mixed network using WEP or WPA1/2 for security. All this is in your user manual!

You can find the manual online here: http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man...7/607SL100.PDF Start at Page 39.

I believe you mean B/G mixed network or just B. Actually the stiletto only receives 802.11B it will ignore G in the Mixed mode.

Sorry, but how do I know what mode it is in?

The stiletto only talks 802.11B The access point or wireless router needs to talk the B protocol. It can do that by selecting the mixed mode otherwise it will only talk the G mode and won't connect.

You might be able to turn on some advance logs on your access point or router to enable to see what protocols and mac addresses are trying to connect to your network.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help so far, rubin, and thanks in advance for your patience, lol.

My next question is, how do I get my wireless router to broadcast the SSID? I have no idea how to check and/or change what it is broadcasting.

By default most wireless routers or access points broadcast their SSID. On my Linksys access points, the configuration is located in the advanced settings under the wireless tab. There is a radio button with the title "SSID Broadcast" and the choices are yes or no. Obviously, if you don't want it to broadcast you would pick no.

On most linksys routers, the default SSID name is linksys. You could turn on your stiletto and select the Internet option and a list of available SSID's are presented. That is why you need to broadcast your SSID.

Keep asking questions. I'm not running out of patience, but I guess eventually I will run out of answers.

Thanks again, rubin.

Here's the next question (each one dumber than the previous):

How do I check the settings of my router? I have a Linksys as well.

I've never had a problem connecting to my router. I have 3 wireless laptops (2 Toshiba and 1 IBM) and my router automatically showed up in the available networks for each laptop, so I assumed my router would just show up in my Stiletto as well, but it doesn't. I've never had to look for this information before, which is the reason for all the questions.

The post that MM made above may help you. If this seems over your head, may I suggest a software product to help you. I used the free version but the premium version may be exactly what you need. It's called Network Magic. Basically its a front end program that configures all your networks for you. Its very good and has been getting some good press lately. It will go out and give you a nice map of your network It will automaticlly create printer and network shares for you as well as allow you to configure your network. You can look for yourself at www.networkmagic.com. I read about it in some magazine, I think it was Laptop mag.

If you still are having trouble, maybe you could pm me and I can find a time to walk you through what you need.

Thanks for that link, it's definitely a user friendly program, however, when I enter the default IP address in the address bar I get "Page Not Found" and when click on the link in Network Magic to change the settings on my router, it asks for a user name and password, which I either do not have or cannot remember. Looks like I'm running out of options, lol.

Thanks again for all your help.

There should be instructions to reset the router back to it's defaults. Read the manual to do this. I believe it's just holding in the little button. You may need a paper clip to push the button in. You will probably need to hold it for some time like 20-30 seconds for it to reset. Just read the manual. If you don't have the manual it is available on the linksys support page for your model router. The model number should be on a sticker on your router. After it is reset, the userid and password are set to factory defaults which should be Blank ( no user id) and the password should be "admin" without the quotes.

That should get you in.

When you get the page not found error try hitting the refresh key on your browser, somtimes it just takes a little longer than the browser is waiting for. You might just use the default userid and password through Network Magic

Default Dumb Question

This is probably a stupid question, but my Stiletto says I need to enter a password for my wireless adapter? I'm stumped, because I don't enter a password on my PC or laptop. What gives?
