Default My story and a new toy to compliment the Stiletto.

I never thought of Satellite radio much in the past although my new Honda came with XM and I received XM channels on my Directv. Then, a few months ago the Metropolitan opera announced their new, dedicated channel on Sirius. Being an opera buff I knew I had to get Sirius and learn what I could about sat radio in general. This site provided a great deal of that information.

As I read everything I could, the "flavor of the day" was the Stiletto so I bought one along with the extended warranty from CC. It was okay but not being anywhere near a repeater and with no broadband out here in the woods for wifi, I was pretty limited. Then I bought a carry case and the home dock and was in hog heaven. I recorded my operas and played them back at my leisure, even when I went shopping or whatever, wherever.

I was so pleased I went all out and switched from Directv to DishNetwork which provides most of Sirius' channels, including the MET (they don't have Howard but I never listen to him anyway). I have their HD DVR (622) as my reciever and now I record the operas on it and have them play back through my home theater system which is really the best way to hear the operas. I have a bunch of money tied up in the Stiletto and although I knew I would not use it as much as I did thanks to the Dish set up, I did not want to get rid of it. I thought the Stiletto would still be perfect for travel since I could also download my PC music files and keep part of my library always close by. And it was much easier to fool with than recording onto my mini-disk player.

Well, now I have a new toy - PocketDish. It is an Archos 500 series product that is basically a hard drive with a great 4" viewing screen, wonderful sound and the ability to download mp3s and photos. It will also record sight and sound from any device, even a record player although only in real time. Best of all, any movie or any opera on Sirius I record over the DishNetwork on my 622 will download to the PocketDish via USB in super fast time. I can download a movie in six or seven minutes and an entire audio only opera in about 2 minutes. It fits in my shirt pocket and I can take it anywhere. Any Sirius fan who also happens to subscribe to DishNetwork should not be without this little device - I highly recommend it.

The Stiletto is a very good product although it is not perfect (neither is the Archos PocketDish for that matter). It still has a place in all this somewhere, I think. The problem is that as I explore new technologies that place is getting smaller and smaller.

Glad you like your Stiletto- I remember your threads worrying if it was going to work. You've quickly gone from a n00b to an expert!

Great story. Up until a few people on this board started talking about them, I had never heard of the Archos players. now I have to check that out I suppose.

Fun to see a person that was highly skeptical of their Sirius now become an avid fan and also a purchaser of newer and newer technologies.

great story. I have the archos 604 wifi and love it. ipod dose not even come close to this. Next to sirius this is the best purchase I have made so far. Wifi and touch screen is awsome...and can surf faster than any pda I have tried. In fact I am using it to post this.

The Pocket Dish version of the Archos unit is cool because on certain Dish Network DVR receivers it has high speed data transfer for taking content from your Dish Network DVR to your Pocket Dish. The Archos branded untits do not have that option, but they are still very cool.

I also agree that cranking Sirius through Dish Network, and my Home theater system is amazing.

Yea Jam, that is the very best way to hear Sirius, especially the operas. If someone listens to lets say, Howard, then it makes no difference but music is really enhanced through a good home theater amp and speakers. The high speed transfer from the Dish DVR to the Archos is also the nuts. When I was looking for a video/photo device I read all the reviews about the Archos, Cowan, IPod, Samsung, etc. Most reviews were pretty good on all of them.

Then, when I got the Stiletto and went full boat to Sirius, I also switched from Directv to DishNetwork. That is when I learned about the Archos PocketDish and the decision as to which media player to get was easy. Like I said in the OP, I can record a movie on the Dish 622 DVR/receiver, plug a USB cable from it to the PocketDish and download an entire movie in just a few minutes.

Listen to this - yesterday I downloaded Meet the Fockers, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Oceans Twelve, Sahara and two complete audio only operas from the Sirius Met Opera channel all in less than 20 minutes. In fact, it probably took less as I left to do something and came back 20 minutes later and the transfer was already complete.

What I don't like about it is it does not support HD or CCs. The HD for picture quality itself is not really required on such a small screen. The picture is digital all the way anyway from the sky to the DVR/receiver to the PocketDish and the screen they put on this thing is just brilliant. BUT, it won't downconvert the picture. That is to say, that if I want to record a show that is being presented in HD, I can't download it at all to the PocketDish, even if I would be content to view it downconverted from the original 1080 resolution. The PocketDish I have is 30mg and HD probably would take up too much space. But all in all it is a neat device and a good compliment to the Stiletto if you happen to be a Dish subscriber. Now, IF the PocketDish had a Sirius receiver built in - well, you know the story.
