Default Should I buy?

Hey folks...

I currently have a Starmate and love it. BUT, during Christmas purchases, I recieved enough gift cards and Reward Zone bucks to afford a Stilletto. But it seems like the reception is pretty mixed on the unit. Should I wait to get one until it is "perfected"? And should I spring for the 100? In my mind, I love the idea of being able to listen to games durning halftime at Titan games at the Stadium, but mostly it would be used in my car.

Any help would be awesome!

My only advice would be to make sure you have an active repeater nearby...check the terr setting on your starmate and if its strong you should be ok. These things cost a lot of dough and if you do your homework and make sure the reciever will work to YOUR expectations you should be satisfied.I love mine! Good luck...

Got it for Christmas and have been less than impressed. The unit was not QA'd properly and their front line techs are limited in their knowledge. I have yet to be able to connect to the internet with this and so far they can't tell me how to do it either.

I think you may want to wait until they increase storage capacity and properly document and QA the unit.

You're one of the only people that I've heard about that can't connect via WiFi. You should start a thread here describing the symptoms because you may have a bad unit.

The bottom line with the stiletto, is you need the docks for inside reception from satelite. If you are having problems with your wireless router, It has been shown here on the forum that many people have great success with the simple linksys wireless access points or wireless routers. I don't think much work was done testing out a lot of different manufactures wifi equipment.

You can always add another access point on your home network so if you have everything working with your Pre-N network but you cannot get your stiletto to connect go out and buy a simple WAP54G linksys access point. Add this to your network.

Thanks. I live in Franklin, TN which is about 30 minutes outside of Nashville, but don't know if I have a repeater around me. Maybe I should wait until these things go down in price....

Not all the time. I've heard from people in Boston, Philadelphia, New York and myself in Houston that have absolutely no problem with indoor reception using just the built in antenna.

Add Charlotte, NC to that list. I use my Stiletto when I'm in the warehouse and it works fine.

I will admit one problem I had with their quality checks.. the ugly headphone with the antenna built in has a loose wire sticking out right at the part that plugs into the unit. The sound on the left ear cuts in and out. I'd have taken it back, but I was one of the morons that got it on the first day, and it was the last one they had at the store. I didn't want to wait for a replacement.

Pardon my ignorance....but does anyone know if Nashville area is a good place to have one of these units? Like I said, I would be using it mostly at the Stadium during games, but also like the wifi part of it as well.

On a post note, got into my car this morning and can't get my Starmate to power on...so unless it is still under warranty, I might HAVE to get a new one....

There is a repeater in Nashville, go here to see the map and coverage.

Not sure where the stadium is, but I imagine it is close to the downtown area. If so, you'll get good reception in and around downtown Nashville. You may not have repeater coverage 30 minutes north of the city however.

This unit will still work fine in the car though, correct? So at worst, I have a portable unit that until more repeaters are out there, gives me problems in the out-lying area?

That is correct, but don't assume because of a few posters that your reception will be terrible either. I live in an area that has no repeaters whatsoever for either service. But I can take walks and use the unit around my home. While I do get some occasional drop-outs for the most part it works okay. I do have to use the headphone/antenna, but the same goes for my Pioneer Inno too.

It is possible you'll be in an area where your reception while using it as a portable won't be that great as there is nothing like an area with a repeater. But lets not forget there are a lot more areas that don't have repeaters than do.

If you have a home or car kits it will be no different than any other tuner. In fact my experience with the car kit has provided me actually better reception that my previous JVC1 Sirius Connect tuner did.

When you consider the Wifi (Internet Radio) Radio Replays, Library (your own music) I've not found any place were I was totally without the ability to use the Stiletto. I think some folks buy it assuming it is somehow going to have miraculous reception and when it does not, suddenly they exclaim, "its junk I tell you". I totally disagree! Try it for yourself.

Thanks Bad,

I am beginning to think that it is a bad unit. I have tried multiple networks and have had no success.

Have you searched the forum here for info on WiFi? I don't use it so I can't tell you but there could be an easy trick to fix it.

All FAQ's and documentation on the WiFi is very low-level. I am very technical and at this point know more about the units than their front line support. My guess is that this is either a defective unit or that they haven't QC'd this unit against many routers. I had a tech guy online who basically was saying "good luck and let me know what you find" after a half hour with him.
Fact is, the knowledge within thier own tech support dept is lacking. The guy I just talked to knew nothing of what the person from yesterday recommended. What they are doing is pawning off thier problems to the router manufacturers.
