Default Who got a Stiletto for Xmas? What do you think so far?

I got a Stiletto 100 along with a car kit and home kit for Xmas. My initial impressions are very good. FYI, I live in Portland, Maine. I am not sure if there is a terrestrial repeater around here.
  • Signing up for service was quick and easy via the internet. I had it up and running in about 15 minutes. They should waive the setup fee for the holidays though.
  • The home kit is connected to speakers and I use the WiFi connection for listening in the house. Works great!
  • As a portable, I've been getting a decent signal when using the antenna headphones, but man, they hurt after a while. I hope a new design comes out soon.
  • I was easily able to load some of my WMA files onto the Stiletto from my PC. XP recognized the device, and I was able to sync up with media player easily.
  • I tried out the car kit, but have not connected everything up properly yet. I had a hard time getting a decent FM signal, but the satellite signal was strong to the Stiletto. I may go with a cassette adapter instead of the FM.

My initial impression of the products is very good. It's a very nice unit, stylish, easy to navigate, good sound. Better headphones would make a big difference. I will buy some good headphones like Shure or Sennheiser and hopefully I can get a decent signal outside without the antenna headphones.

I would like to hear opinions from other newbie Stiletto owners.

Check your 'antenna aiming' settings. If you're getting a strong terrestrial signal you won't need the antenna headphones.

I got the Stiletto 10. It is an awesome radio.. However I am very disappointed with the home and car kit for the money. The FM transmitter is absolutely terrible. I had a Starmate and could listen to Sirius on any radio throughout the house. Not possible with the Stiletto. Itis so bad that the FM transmitter barely reaches my car radio even when the Stiletto is mounted right next to my car radio. Never had this problem with the Starmate.

Again the radio itself is great. I love the recording capability, the extra information in the display, the and way sports coverage is handled. The sound through a direct connection seems better than from my Starmate.

Have not tested the portable coverage yet..

The transmitter power is not a fault of the equipment. The FCC made Sirius turn down the punch of the FM transmitters in the newer units so you wont get near the quality of the old ones. Dont look for this to change anytime soon on future devices.

Default S-10 for Christmas

Got a S-10. Impressed so far. Good reception using the antenna headphones. The headphones are not as bad as I thought...but there is room for improvement.

Default Re; Who got a stiletto for Xmas

Hi - I got one and same opinion. Better earbuds won't help - I tried - the only good reception you can get outside is with the painful headphones. I can't wait until better ones come out either. I went for a walk with the earbuds in and the satellite kept losing the signal. Other than that I love the interface...wish you could record from the internet stream !

You guys might want to try the "antenna headphone mod"- where you cut off the ear bud part and attach the antenna part to the inside of a hat. You can use the earbuds at the same time so you'll get better reception AND comfort at the same time.

Default headphones S100

I just read a review below where I think it was thrasherduck had the antenna headphones plugged in for reception but listened via the earbuds. I never thought to do that - you can at least be comfortable wearing the antennas around your neck with the earbuds in when you're outside for a while.

There's also thread about mounting the antenna headphones to backpacks and inside baseball hats. That would certainly be my solution if I had to use them because I didn't find them all that comfortable.

Well I am a Sirius owner and love the service (3 subs) but the stiletto is junk. I opened it up on X-mas eve and added my sub via the website. I can hold a signal for 20-30 seconds at a time. Even out doors in a wide open area it cuts out. I live in Chicago and have never had any problems with the other radios just this. Needless to say its going back tomorrow morning, my question is do I have to contact Sirius CS to cancel or go through the website??? Will I get a full refund for this radio too????? I would asume so since I have only had it going to 24 hours.

Update: Just got off the phone with customer service (very nice) and had my account canceled to problems. I explained that the Stiletto was my fourth Sirius radio on the account and due to very poor reception I wanted to have it canceled and my credit card refunded. All is taken care of, now its off to BestBuy to return the radio. On a side note I talked to C/S and she was telling me that they have had hundreds of people calling in to cancel their Stiletto subs, I have high hopes for a future player but this was just pure junk.

Yea sounds like your really down on the stiletto...if it was me I would have returned the radio(before cancelling my sub) and exchanged it for a new one...maybe you just got a bad unit? Anyway good luck

The Chicago repeaters could have been down as well. I know some of the repeaters around Detroit blink out every now and then. Most of the time you can get reception in the tunnels on I-696, but every now and then you get nothing.

I live on the western side of Metro Detroit, the closest repeater to me is over 20 miles away, I get a ZERO on the Terrestrial Antenna Aiming at my house. I have an antenna on my roof with the wire running in my office window and connected to a home dock - 100% all day long.

I've setup several recordings - all fired and recorded flawlessly. It's great to listen to Howard and just be able to blast past the few commercials that are there. It's the radio equivalent of blasting through commercials on my DISH Net HD-DVR

I have dismantled my antenna headphones and velcroed just the antenna to the top of a baseball hat - went out for a 5 mile run this afternoon. Got excellent reception on the run with only a couple of drop outs - and I can blame that on clusters of tall trees blocking the line of sight for the antenna. My car radio loses the Sirius signal around those trees at that time of the day as well.

I've been able to listen via WiFi off of my router, my neighbor's router, my Mom's router and several hot spots in the area - including a Carribou Coffee and my local Community Center.

I've already loaded up a bunch of my favorite MP3s as well - including dumping some iTunes purchases to CD then ripping them back into Yahoo.

I LOVE my Stiletto! Possibly the best Christmas Present I've ever received - and I was/am VERY spoiled! I think this is an amazing piece of hardware and I think Sirius did an excellent job with their first portable. I'm sure the product will evolve and I look forward to future models of this device.

This morning I also had 3 subs - I called Sirius this afternoon to cancel my Sportster sub. The CSR I talked to said she had a lot of people calling in today to do what I was doing - they activated their Stilettos yesterday and were cancelling their other receivers today.

Maybe I was alittle harsh on the Stiletto but my 3 other radios are fantastic and wouldnt trade that for anything. Like I said I went for a 2 mile run outside and had constant interuptions every 20-30 seconds. The size was a little bit of a problem to me, but I could have lived with it. I really wanted this to work and thought it would here in Chicago but it was just poor reception. Im thinking of XM's portable but that means I would have to go back to XM and I left them years ago because I didnt like their service. Maybe its good old mp3 player for me =)

If you are in Chicago where there is repeater coverage and your signal is dropping out every 20-30 seconds then I be looking to swap it out. This would be a clear indicator to me you've got a bad tuner.

I think based on my experience even using it in an area without a repeater you were way over the top harsh. I don't understand why folks find it necessary to start calling these devices junk based on one individual experience.
