Default Do you have to use WEP key 1 for WiFi?

I am using a Linksys router and had trouble connecting using the encyption WEP key 3. When I changed my encryption to WEP key 1, I was able to connect my Stiletto.

Do you have to use WEP key 1 or can you use any of the 4 keys available?

I use WEP Key 1. I do find that the passphrase does not work as I thought in the router and I had to put in the ASCII codes for the phrase I wanted it to be.

For Instance I have a 13 character password (26 Hex Digits)
If I wanted the password STILETTOROCKS I would enter each of ascii codes for the phrase into the key 1 field.
S T I L E T T O R O C K S

Then when connected to the router, I enter the passphrase for the password into my stiletto. That seems to work every time. I'm not sure why when I enter a passphrase into the router and hit generate it does not put in the same password. It must use the passphrase as some random key instead of the actual phrase like I wanted.

Anyway this was confusing for me but that is how I do it.

Enjoy!

I have 128-bit encryption set on my router, therefore I only show WEP Key1. I used that as the password and the Stiletto connected right to it. You might want to try using 128-bit.

You may need to use Key 1 to function properly.

The Linksys Passphrase generates a wep code based on any length phrase. It is not the same as the 13 ascii vs 26 Hex entry method. Per Linksys it is only compatible with other Linksys products. Many routers allow for 13 ACSII, only Linksys has a "generate" button to create the wep code based on a proprietary routine. If you generate a password with the button you should be able to read the actual hex code that is generated in the key 1 field.

I will need to test the Stiletto to see if the 13 ASCII method would work.

I know the 13 ascii key works because that is what I do.
