What exactly did you dislike about the Panavise. I am looking at one of the indash parts now. They are the only one that list a model for my car with its radio/cd player. The Panavise directions even reference the alarm module that is in my car, but not in the other Subaru models.

On both my mounts for my Windstar and my Sebring, I had to drill the holes. The holes or rather start of holes in the mounts were alligned 90 degrees the wrong way. I too took a piece of paper and punched holes in the back of the dock then transferred the holes to the mount.

NOTE:
Care must be taken to mount the car docs low enough so that you can put the wires to the back of the car mounts. On my S50 I did last weekend, I could only drill two holes in the mount but they held well enough.

Here is a picture that you can see the antenna and power wires needed to go below the bend in the mount. The bottom two holes where slightly below where the bend was. I really did not think it was worth drilling those holes there. I was going to use some double stick tape, but the two bolts held so tight I decided it was ok.

Mainly the mounting location, it was off to the side of the head unit, which put it basically at knee level. In fact the first time my son got in the truck after I set it up, he slammed his knee against my tuner. I was like BOY!! watch what you are doing. But clearly after a few more days and other passengers, I realized this just wasn't going to work. Now granted this may just be in my Nissan, but I've read others say the same thing.

If you luck out and it doesn't put the tuner in the way, then you'll be good to go. I also found where mine was that low it had a terrible glare and of course there was no way to move it, unless I would have used another piece (multimedia swivel) and that would have just cause it to stick into the way even further. So that is my story with the Panavise.

By the way Panavise actually made me an extra thick version because I called to send it back and my main complaint initially was vibration. They finally more or less resolved that, but unfortunately these other issues killed it for me. Even after making me the extra thick one, they refunded my money and told me not to worry about sending it back. They were really eager to please me.

Dab, where did you buy your panavise mount. My main concern is quality, I am stuck with the same mounting from all of the mount suppliers.

I'll be honest with you, I was doing some beta testing for Panavise, so I actually bought it direct, but they don't actually do that, they sell through dealers. I also tested many of the suction cup mounts that they use today.
