Angry Former S50 Owner, PISSED about not recording in Dock Issue

I am about to throw my Stiletto 100 out the window. After a year of a horrible experience with the S50, it not remembering where you were in playback, it losing the antenna signal, requiring a hard reboot (taking the battery out).. etc.

I finally SPLURGED for a Stiletto 100. Read the manual.. WHICH STATES THAT THE UNIT WILL WAKE UP FROM SLEEP TO RECORD A SCHEDULED SHOW.. NOTHING IS STATED IN THE MANUAL THAT THIS WILL NOT OCCUR IN A CAR DOCK.

I schedule to record my Howard Stern on the 1st. No recording.. I thought maybe I had turned it off, not put into sleep. I again schedule a recording at 3am.. again no recording. Now I see that there is a sentence on the Sirius website in a faq that I found through this website that the Stiletto will NOT WAKE up from sleep in a car dock!!! WHAT??? It doesn't say that in the manual anywhere.

At least my S50 recorded Howard when I left it on!

Is there a way to MAKE my stiletto record Howard every morning at 3am? Is there a trick? I don't have an issue with my battery draining in my car. I left my S50 on for a year with no battery problems.. and my cigarette lighter socket stays on even when the car is off.

After my experience with the S50 not remembering where you were on the playback of a recording.. and me thinking they would come out with an update to fix that (they didn’t).. I really researched the Stiletto, went into a store, read the manual.. downloaded the manual. Read it cover to cover and came to the conclusion that Sirius has worked out all the kinks and that the Stiletto will record and playback my Howard Stern for me. Now I find out that it won’t.

I am really bummed.

In addition.. in the manual it states that the Stiletto will turn completely off after 18 hours of sleep.. that's perfect as it would prevent the unit from draining the car battery if not driven for a couple days. So there really is no reason for them to prevent sleep wakeup in the car dock.

i'm sorry that the stiletto has let you down as far expectations. I think it's b/c your car dock doesn't constantly have power. I think the Stiletto won't start up on it's own if not plugged into an external antenna and power source. When I initially bought the SL100 (w/o the Car/Home kit) one of the first things I setup was to record Howard at 6am...The first couple of times I don't think it started up. This is what i'm guessing your problem is...(i'm sure someone else can say something more about the subject though

I don't understand your 18 hours of sleep and then it will turn off completely comment. I don't have my manual around (work) but it doesn't make much sense

My car dock does have constant power even when the car is off. That's how I was able to record Howard with my S50 for the past year. If it didn't require resetting and it remembered where it was playing back from I would have kept the S50.

I just got off the phone with Sirius Tech Support and they told me that they will NEVER ALLOW THE STILETTO TO WAKE UP FROM SLEEP TO RECORD A SCHEDULED PROGRAM IN THE CAR DOCK! They said to me that they will NEVER come out with an update to allow recording in a car dockl because they are worried that people's batteries will die.

That is a REAL bummer.. since this unit is a recording unit and can record up to 100 hours.. but not when it is in your car dock.

I mentioned the 18 hour shutoff when in sleep mode, because it states that the unit will completely shut off after 18 hours of sleep in the manual. Since the unit can actually record in sleep mode, then I assumed it would stop recording shows after 18 hours of inactivity to prevent battery drain.. but I guess that's not the direction they are going.

Nice.

So now the question is.. how can I hack my car dock to look like a home dock? That would solve this problem.

I know you already have a car dock, but wouldnt it be a lot easier to hack a home dock to simulate the car dock instead of the other way around? I mean there are already lighter ports to AC ports right?

I think you need a home dock.

Each dock apparently has information that lets the stiletto know what kind of dock it is in.

Car dock will not stay powered on. It has firmware on it where it will shutdown after 4 hrs of inactivity.

well, you can either throw down another 70 bucks on a home dock which is what i did.
another option is to get this converter thing that you plug into your home electric socket and on the other side it has a hole-the cigarette lighter hole-so you can plug your car dock at home or any other cigarette lighter device. i know they exist but i'm not sure where to get one. try googleing it or something

The home dock does not have the preset buttons as the car dock does. I don't mind spending another $70. It's just that I don't want to have to take my radio out of my car every night and then put it in a home dock.. and vice versa every morning.

Plus I usually get in my car before Howard is done recording.. so I will end up interrupting the recording each time I get in the car.

It's a really hassle for something that yesterday I thought was the coolest piece of technology on the planet. Today I am not so thrilled.

You could use the preset buttons on the remote instead of the dock. I actually find this much easier than leaning across the radio to use the dock presets.

So Eric,
Are you saying that I can install the home docking kit into my car?

If that's the case, I am all over it.. (though I still like the preset buttons on the car dock).

I'm not sure about installing it in the car; I suppose it can be done. I just know if it can be done you could use the remote for your presets.

Keep us updated; I'm sure there's a lot of SBS members that would be interested if this can be done.

Lightbulb

Wire up a 12v lead from car battery with a fuse and maybe a switch to turn it off when you leave your car for longer than a day. If the car dock sees constant power from the battery it wont shut off when car is shut off.
probly less than $10 total.

I don't have a Stiletto But, the S50's home dock will work in a car.
If you use the car power cord and car antenna.

I would imagine the same to be true for the Stiletto.

This is not so... it goes by inactivity of the unit. The Soloist has AC power to it constantly, but the Stiletto see it as a car dock and after 4 hours of inactivity the Stiletto will go into standby. So it will do the same thing in a car dock even though it has constant power.

I don't understand the OP's issue with using the Stiletto as a PNP after all isn't that the whole point of the design, to remove it from one dock, place it in another? The home dock can't be mounted in the car, unless you did some sort of self fabrication to create a design to do it.

Default My bad.....

Well, that DOES SUCK!
I don't think a home dock in a car would solve the problem either, unless you gave it constant 12v power. i.e.when i unplug my home dock from wall it will only read 'antenna not detected'. I did order an extra cigarette adapter from tss but haven't tried it with the home dock yet.
I also wanted to try it with my pnp dock but i'm busy charging batteries and loading songs to go snowboarding, So it will have to wait....
