Default SL10 vs SL100 - I think Im losing my fxcking mind here...

I bought a SL10 a month ago. Love it. The antenna headphones are pretty much a slap in the face from sirius, but other than that the device is cool. I figured, for $100 im not gonna miss wifi and loading my own mp3's seeing as i can still "love" songs that i hear live. WRONG. A couple days ago I discovered that i couldnt get the heart button to work right because the SL10 doesnt have "love", just recording.

Magically, the SL100 went on sale at amazon so i decided to upgrade. Got the unit on saturday and ive been messing with it all weekend. First thing I tried was the "love". it works, just not how eveyone claims. I was under the impression that if i click over in the middle of the song, i could "love" it and i would get a complete recording in my library. turns out you have to listen to the entire song while its being "loved" otherwise you ony get a partial recording. While not a big deal, it was a let down nonetheless.

So then I decide im gonna load some MP3's. I figure the SL100 has 2gb of storage, so Ill load 1gb of my own stuff and leave 1gb for "love". WRONG. According to the manual, SL100 only allows you to load 800MB of personal content. I have yet to find any article anywhere that mentions this, which disturbs me.

Ok so Ive come to grips with my gripes. Its not like im planning to downgrade or anything. ill deal. So today im driving around and Frank Zappa comes on. Bam, Ill add him to artist seek so that i can know every time he comes on. WRONG. im pressing every button on the remote and i cant get a menu to add him to artist seek. so i go home and look in the manual to figure out what I was doing wonrg. its not in there. So I look in the manual for my old SL10. Its there.

So let me get this straight. SL10 has artist/song seek and the SL100 doesnt? It looks like instead, the SL100 has "hide channels/genres"...WTF?

How could the Stletto 100 record part of a song that it did not have data for in order to record? The "LOVE" button only allows you to record a full song if the full song is available in the buffer. It can't create data it doesn't already have.

The limited MP3 storage has been well documented. I can show you web site after web site that gives you a break down of the storage on the Stiletto. By the way you actually get a little more than 800 MB, its more like 916 MB at least according to Yahoo.

S10 was allowed to have artist seek because it doesn't have the "LOVE" button and also very, very limited amount of space. This of course is an RIAA concession that SIRIUS made to stay away from a lawsuit.

The 800 MB is the way the player calculates the space available. The capacity listed on the box is 2 GB, with 1 GB available for MP3s. Box capacity differs from real capacity, due to a reason that I understand but I'm not very good at explaining. Someone else can explain that, or I can try if no one else does... but it will be messy

The ability to only love a song that you've heard from teh beginning is simple if you stop and think about it: You can't record what isn't there. When you put a channel on, the radio starts creating a replay buffer. What was on before that replay buffer is impossible to hear, because the radio's chipset wasn't 'listening to that channel', if you follow what I mean. Think about it this way: let's say you're watching TV with a DVR. You're watching a show, and then you switch to another channel... you can't rewind that channel you just switched to because you NEVER SAW it, therefore the box never had a chance to buffer it. It's the same way with this radio. It can only record what it can buffer.

Artist/song seek is missing from the SL100, because SIRIUS didn't want to get their ass sued off by the RIAA (it has something to do with either the increased recording capacity, or the ability to save single songs that would make this a problem)

and by the way, the SL10 has "hide channel/genres" too.

That is okay we both expressed it a little bit differently... We know he'll understand it now for sure.

I really do wish the S100 had the song/artist seek, I really do miss that feature.

I understand the part about the buffer. I just thought it worked differently somehow.

to be honest, if the antenna headphones werent such pieces of shit...I dont think I would be as angry about everything else. Theyre just pointless and painful. I want to disconnect the antenna from the headphones and mount it onto a proper set of headphones. does anyone know of any sites where others have tried that?

also, if anyone knows of good articles that breakdown the SL100 id appreciate those too. Im tired of surprises...

Well the headphone/antenna seem to be the most disliked part of the Stiletto. We've had threads about how terrible they are and thread about how they really aren't so bad. So, this is sort of one of those things that hedges on opinion. I personally don't find them that bad and they do the job when I need them. Do I wish they had some different ones, of course, but mainly for variety more than discomfort.

Check out www.tss-radio.com and crutchfield.com both have GREAT descriptions of the S10 and S100 with every bit of the information anyone would ever need to make an informed decision. BB and CC web sites suck for real in depth information.

Research, research, research. All this issues are well documented here; no surprises.

From a logic standpoint; how do you expect the Stiletto to "love" a song without it being in the buffer? Basically the Stiletto would have to constantly and simultaneously buffer EVERY station in order to do this.

"Satilette On Demand" Download any song, from any channel from any moment in time. Great Concept.

Could this be IP Radio?

it would be a nice concept. I have always wished that I could turn the tv on at 8:15 and say "oh crap it started at 8" and the Tivo would be smart enough to download ths signal from the last 15 minutes. Same with the recording of the Stiletto, I don't expect I can record anything other than what I just tuned into. One thing I sort of wish is that you could Love songs and save them to the stiletto from Radio Replays. That would be a great feature.

Same here. Wonder why this isn't able to be done?
