Strange that you mentioned that, I noticed that today, in fact just a little while ago. I just happen to hit the volume button and it allowed me to turn it up the other 25%. I was like SWEET!

repeated from stiletto nyc thread:

I got a stilleto 10 over xmas. I use it at work in lower manhattan and it's reception was perfect, even without the headphones attached, (but I do sit next to large windows). At home, (a pre-war brick apartment building), the reception is really bad unless I put the unit right at the window. I'm considering buying a home kit, but haven't yet. Walking around the streets the reception was amazing.

Since updating the firmaware the other night the reception has been cutting out all the time. I wish I had just left it with the software as it came. :-(

Hopefully the signal loss is temporary.

All in all, I am in love with this little radio. I bought it to listen to Radio One, but i'm discovering that so many stations are really rockin!

Default Possible help for WiFi

If you have read my earlier posts you would have seen my results of updating both of my S100s. One continued with the same WiFi range as before the update, and one suffered diminished range.

I decided to follow the directions in the Recovery thread. I must warn you, ALL of your data and settings will be lost, and there is no guarantee that this will work for you, but I now have 2 units with the same exact WiFi range. I am once again able to listen from any room in my house without dropping out.

This did not fix the issues that I, and some of you, have seen with connecting or reconnecting after the signal is lost.

Again, this will wipe all of your info, and may not actually work on your unit. Good luck! Happily streaming Buzzsaw

I'm not sure I agree. The change from 802.11b to 802.11g is a hardware change, that is, it is a different chip set. The ability to store an SSID and reference it without a search is a software change; there are no hardware changes necessary. Though you may be right that it is not among the priorities for them, many security conscious people...in an increasingly security conscious world...may help them think differently. Yes, one can use MAC filtering. But MAC addresses are easily spoofed.

Now, why would one want 802.11g on the Stiletto? It can't even make full use of 802.11b (the best Sirius offers is 128Kb/s), nor can 99% of home network connections. If they were to combine that capability with the ability to transfer songs, etc. without the USB cable, that would be pretty cool!

Default Just did it on dialup

Start time: 8:48 PM on dia- up with a 50.6 kbps connection.

Downloaded 1 of 5 files ~ 1 min
Downloaded 2 of 5 files ~ 10 min
Downloaded 3 of 5 files ~ 1 hour 28 min
Downloaded 4 of 5 files ~ 5 min
Transferring software update ~ 1 min
Finished 10:31 PM

S100 then verified update while still connected to USB port
Finished 10:41 PM

Inserted into home docking station. Started updating.
10:55 PM noticed it was hung at 32%

11:05 powered off, disconnected AC to docking station and battery, restarted in docking station.

11:07 Subscription updated.

11:07 I have the time in the display.

How about that!

Joel, the same people that spoof your MAC can just as easily sniff the SSID without it being broadcast. If you are sending data back and forth, it can be sniffed. Hiding the SSID falls under security by obscurity, but if someone wants the info bad enough it will be found. Use WPA or WPA2 and MAC filtering. Stay away from WEP, and don't believe that hiding the SSID is any better than MAC filters.

Hawk thanks for this valuable information. This is what makes this forum work so well is you guys working through issues and then posting them. It is good to see that at least for you that the Recovery Procedure did the trick on the range and drop-out issue. Now if others do it and we can verify that is the case, we know what to suggest moving forward. Clearly support isn't going to know what to tell you to do.

I am going to continue to work on the connection issues after a signal loss.

Again good info.. Thanks

Well I certainly admire your patience, most would have been going crazy doing this on a dial up. I think it is worth the wait and trouble though. Thanks for giving us a round about how long this process could take on dial up.

Yes it has been made pretty clear this isn't going to happen, so this is where my post is coming from. We all know it is possible, but they aren't going to change hardware on the Stiletto in midstream production and they have decided that the current method of security is as far as they are willing to go. There is hope though for the next device.

Well, thank you for your help and this forum. I'm not device challenged, but I have to tell you, I didn't have a clue about Sirius (one week owner) and the S100.

From what I read about the update I knew patience was the key.

Thanks again.

Yeah, I live in the "boonies" and am stuck with dial up for now too. I upgraded my Stiletto yesterday with the software on my 26.4 kbps connection and it took just over 3 hours. Just had to be patient, but it all seemed to go well and I had no problems at all. (Man that 3rd file takes forever though. It took 2 hours just to download file number 3 on my dialup connection).
Also, on the sound quality issue I discussed the other day; I'm not noticing it being as bad now. I guess it's just my "picky" ears. I still think the audio is a bit "different" sounding than the previous units I've had, but I'm getting used to it now. Anyway, the features and functionality of this unit certainly make up for it anyway. I've had my Stiletto for just over a week now and I LOVE it. I guess my only gripe would be the internal antenna. I don't think the reception using just the internal antenna is as good as on the comparable XM units (I know my MyFi receives a stronger internal signal). But this isn't a big issue, as I don't use mine as a live portable much anyway. I mainly record and listen later at work. (Also, it sucks that there is no terrestrial repeater in the west part of Knoxville, TN where I work. XM has one there that works well, but Sirius only has one in Knoxville and it is downtown).

Overall, though, I'd give a big thumbs up to the Stiletto. I'm loving it. Now I'm thinking about upgrading my XM MyFi for an Inno or Helix.
