Default Better to register a car in NY or PA?

My PA registration/inspection is coming up in August, and I have a choice of registering my car in PA or NY(western, not NYC) due to my college home and my parent's home being in two different states. I'm wondering if somebody can tell me what the approximate costs are to register and inspect the car in NYC, esp. if you know how much it is relative to PA. Is there any tight restrictions NY has on inspection? Is there emissions testing? Is it expensive to register in NY? Thanks!

Not sure what the reg fees are between the two states but isn't this something you can find online? What I would be more concerned is who has the higher property tax? Go with the state that either has the lowest or no property tax.

I'm sure once I post this someone will come out of the woodwork and tell me I'm completely wrong, but I would have to say Pennsylvania is the better of the two places to register a car. I think New York has stricter emissions testing like New Jersey and in Pennsylvania you'll probably have lower insurance rates.

Depends on where you are at in PA. If you are near Philly or Pittsburgh, then you will have high insurance and pass emissions. If you are the rural part of the state then it will be inexpensive in PA.

I looked on their website and thought it went by county but I figured you've got a better chance of getting cheaper insurance in PA than in NY.

Hey guys,

Actually, my insurance is already in NY. I have no idea why I said NYC in the first post, I meant NYS. To have it in NYS costs me $100 less/month compared to Philly, and the insurance company(USAA) says it does not matter where the car is registered, as long as the state it is insured in by them is the primary state it is driven in.
