You know it's amusing reading all these different prices considering the gas companies say they don't fix the prices and it's all the taxes. I don't know how the taxes in the States work but in Canada you don't get tax differences from town to town in the same province, yet there are prices differences even just in different parts of the city. If it's not the oil companies setting ther prices the I don't know what it is.

Huh? If the prices were fixed by the oil companies, wouldn't you expect to see the same price everywhere?

But how would that be evidence of price fixing?

I think you're thinking Fixed Price, as in it would be the same price everywhere. I was talking about Price Fixing as in charging more for a certain area because of demand, demographics, etc. I'm not against capitalism and the whole supply and demand system but don't tell me that you're not creating a variable cost then turn around and do it anyways. If it was the goverment causing the price increases then fuel would be the same price across the entire state/province.

So..if it's 2.89 here....why should it be $3.09 there, just because it's a more richy type area!!

They can see who has more traffic and the higher fill amount per customer. So if you get an area that has a large number of customer, those customers usually put in a higher amount of fuel (SUV's?), then if the company sets the fuel price a little higher there then they will make even more money.
Higher Volume/Customer + more customer * higher price = more money

That's not price fixing, that's market economics. Price fixing means multiple companies who should be competing set a minimum price. Charging the most people will pay to make the most money is just capitalism.

LIke I said, I don't have a problem with capitalism. After all it is their gas to sell. I have a problem with them getting all rightous and saying that its the goverments fault that the prices are so high.

By the way... The $ is up to 1.069/L today here. Thats 4.062 canadian/Gal or 4.125 US/Gal.

Yes but you don't get the same flashlight costing more at one Walmart then having it cost more at the other Walmart across the street. Gas you do get that.

I doubt there are any Wal-marts across the street from each other. You see different gas prices on different sides of the street because of convenience. I used to work near 2 Chevron stations, across the street from each other, both owned by the same guy. Gas was more expensive at one of them because it was more convenient to access. That's not price fixing. That's smart business.

Man, all of you paying in the $2.50 range should realize how lucky you are. I'm nearly a dollar more.
