Myth 8 - compressing hydrogen for automotive storage tanks takes too much energy.

compressing hydrogen to 350 bar takes about 10% of the hydrogen energy's content. most of this compression energy can be recovered aboard the car by reducing the pressure back to what the fuel cell needs.

Every year or so I go hunting down the latest in solar power to see what toys I can make. If I was rich I would have turned my house into solar a long time ago. That dude spent almost a million dollars. As it stands... I can only afford to power my fountain with solar. But it's a start. I was looking into some geo thermal systems this very last weekend. Whew... expensive.

Road, if you ever build a house I would suggest looking into an earth-sheltered or an earth-bermed house. Both will provide incredible energy savings in both the summer and winter. Not to mention, in some municipalities, there will be a tax savings since you only pay taxes on an appraisal and most appraisals are only on above-grade living areas. Combine this with a few solar panels on the "roof" and you should be able to be self-sufficient with your energy needs.

Yeah, that probably wouldn't be the best idea. I know they are becoming popular in the mid-west due to tornados. There are quite a few in PA as well; they are more for energy savings than anything.

myth 9 - hydrogen is too expensive to compete with gasoline.

on-site miniature reformers can compete very well with gasoline. the advantage comes largely from being able to avoid hydrogen delivery costs, as miniature reformers use the natural gas distribution system that already exists.

bp and ford have both confirmed that hydrogen can compete with gasoline in cost per km.

This is definately a step in the right direction with shec-labs using solar to produce hydrogen. Some of California's buses use 100% hydrogen. We are moving in that direction to hydrogen use vehicles. Probably will take 50-75 years to become a reality of more than 50% of all vehicles using hydrogen. Our grandchildren should definately see the fruits.

I drove by the St. Lucie County landfill which is next to I-95 and you could see the methane burning from pipes coming out of the ground. This is an article about the use of methane to create energy...not hydrogen but usable energy back to the grid...
